Job Description

The University of Maine System is seeking applications for a Mechanical Specialist (CL3)

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is accepting applications for a Mechanical Specialist (CL3). This position performs advanced installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting work in support of University facilities and operations.

The Mechanical Specialist applies specialized technical knowledge in areas such as HVAC and related trades to maintain safe, efficient, and reliable building systems and equipment.

Responsibilities include coordinating projects, prioritizing and assigning work, interpreting blueprints and technical diagrams, ordering materials, and collaborating with campus departments and other skilled trades staff. The position works with minimal supervision and may provide direction, training, and guidance to employees on project sites while ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards and regulations.

The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with occasional nights and weekends, and the availability to assist with emergencies after hours.

This position has been designated as an “Essential Employee” role. This designation means that, in the event of an emergency (including but not limited to severe weather, natural or human-caused disasters, public health emergencies, operational disruptions, or campus closures), you may be required to work to support the continuity of critical University functions.

The starting pay for this full time position is $26.33 or the appropriate transfer rate. Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 4 years of experience in a skilled trade such as HVAC systems.
  • Ability to perform maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting on equipment and building systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, and technical instructions.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to organize work, handle multiple tasks, and help direct projects.
  • Ability to do physical work, including lifting and moving materials.
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to get one by hire date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade licenses or certifications related to HVAC, specifically a Master’s license.
  • State of Maine Oil Board License
  • Experience leading projects or training others.
  • Experience ordering materials and estimating project costs.
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic or maintenance systems.
  • Experience working in schools, commercial buildings, or large facilities.
