The Liquid Phase Division of the Life Sciences and Diagnostic Group, within Agilent, have a major site in Waldbronn in Germany with satellite sites in Europe including Craven Arms in the UK. The Craven Arms site specializes in GPC/SEC (Gel permeation chromatography/ Size exclusion Chromatography) and Dissolution.

This R&D Mechanical Engineering position is at our Craven Arms, UK site. As a Mechanical Engineer in our group, you'll be part of a team that research, develops designs, prototypes and tests new products for Agilent's Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) product line while also supporting current products manufactured at our Malaysian site in Penang. Most projects require mechanical, electrical, firmware, and quality engineers, as well as scientists and software engineers, to create a complete instrumentation system. You will also be working with our marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, and service organizations to transform your designs into marketable products. The extended project team you work with will be spread across the globe at various Agilent sites. You will be reporting to the local R&D manager, joining a small team of engineers.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Involve in mechanical design and development activities of Agilent products (proposals, technical & risks assessment, concepts study, detailed designs, analysis, drawings, prototypes, tests, etc.)
  • Responsible in components sizing, calculation and selection of undertaken design (enclosures, structures, mechanism, automation, thermal management, optics, EMI Shielding, fluidic system and etc.)
  • Propose mechanical architecture/outline, components placement, CAD database management, platform standardization & etc.
  • Key estimator of mechanical BOM cost.
  • Conduct mechanical engineering tests, characterizations, cyclic and reliability tests according to product requirements.
  • Communicate and collaborate with internal teams (PM, Marketing/internal customers, Test engineers, Application engineer, Hardware engineer, Firmware, Software engineer, production engineer and etc.) and external teams (suppliers, design partners, contract manufacturers, etc.).
  • Coordinate and generate mechanical design related test cases.
  • Responsible to ensure mechanical design is meeting the product requirements and project scopes and able to deliver all the Product Lifecycle Deliverables as per the committed milestone.
  • Perform root cause analysis on the issues found during development and sustaining phase.
  • Comply to the documentation requirement and database management as required in the QMS of legal entity.
  • Ensure all the responsible design are delivered according to the corporate design standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent
  • 4+ years of relevant mechanical design.
  • The ability to work in an interdisciplinary, cross-functional environment
  • 3D solid modelling and drafting in CAD Software (Siemens NX-Preferred, Solidworks, Inventor, Creo, etc.)
  • Experience with material processing techniques such as precision machining, sheet metal, casting/molding, 3D printing, etc.
  • Strong technical, analytical and troubleshooting skills. Demonstrate leadership, influencing, communication and planning skills.
  • Team player who can multi-task and establish good rapport with internal customers/sponsors, cross-functional team members and suppliers.
  • Able to adapt well in a dynamic working environment, eager to learn and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Optical design
  • Design of components utilized in heat transfer and thermal-fluid systems
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Evaluation of tolerance stack ups
  • Simulation tools
  • Finite Element (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and other numerical simulation techniques through tools such as ANSYS and Simcenter
