Mechanical Project Engineer | Columbus, OH

IMEG is hiring a Mechanical Project Engineer in Columbus, OH. In this role, you will lead design efforts as a project manager or lead engineer for low to moderate complexity projects and collaborate with senior staff on larger, high complexity work involving mechanical systems for the vertical building industry.

You will work within project budgets, train and mentor less experienced staff, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. You will also support work connected to commissioning, energy performance, and strategic growth services, advancing high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

What You'll Do

  • Lead design efforts for HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems on low to moderate complexity projects.
  • Develop detailed designs, specifications, and calculations using engineering software and tools according to code requirements and IMEG standards.
  • Interact with clients to understand project needs, gather requirements, communicate technical information, and build strong professional relationships.
  • Support project execution through planning, budgeting, and scheduling to meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Document design decisions and client instructions, and monitor project progress related to percent complete and fee expended.
  • Analyze engineering problems and collaborate with senior engineers and consultants to develop practical and efficient solutions.
  • Provide in-process design reviews of system designs, calculations, and specifications, and implement IMEG quality control processes.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering, and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.
  • Prioritize safety in all aspects of engineering work and identify and mitigate potential safety risks associated with mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineers, architects, and project managers, to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals.
  • Identify potential project problems, seek advice from the Project Manager, and support projects through bidding and construction administration.

What You'll Bring

Required Education

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License required

Required Experience

  • 5 years of experience minimum required, 6 preferred, in the building design consulting industry

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts used to produce technical plans and specifications
  • Strong technical and analytical skills, including application of thermodynamics, psychrometrics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics in HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection system design
  • Proficiency with industry-standard engineering software and tools, including HVAC load calculation programs (Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, IES, or similar) and energy compliance software (ComCheck)
  • Proficient in the use of reference resources such as NFPA Link, TechStreet, and/or MadCAD
  • Proficiency in Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, including Revit-based tools, Master Specification editing software (eSPECS), CTC Revit Add-In Tools, and SET Tools for calculations, coordination, and system properties
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals and groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Eagerness and adaptability to take on new challenges
  • Ability to travel up to 15%, including occasional overnight stays

State of Ohio Salary Range: $85,000–$98,000 per year

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.

Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.

Other rewards may include annual bonuses and stock ownership options.
