The role

As a Mechanical Fitter, you'll join a highly skilled team responsible for maintaining, repairing and inspecting critical mechanical systems and equipment across Royal Navy submarines and surface ships. This is a unique opportunity to apply your engineering and mechanical fitting expertise in a role that directly supports the operational capability of the UK's defence infrastructure.

Every repair you complete and every improvement you identify will contribute to national security and the continued success of vital defence operations. Day-to-day, you’ll be required to:

  • Completing planned preventative maintenance, repairs and inspections on mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Identifying and rectifying equipment faults to maintain vessel safety, reliability and performance.
  • Implementing mechanical modifications and alterations to support operational requirements.
  • Working safely within confined spaces and at height while following approved procedures.
  • Suggesting process improvements that enhance efficiency, productivity and engineering performance.

This is a full-time, onsite role based at HMNB Clyde. Set working times are Monday to Thursday.

Essential experience of the Mechanical Fitter

  • Proven experience working as a Mechanical Fitter.
  • Experience within a highly regulated engineering, marine, defence, nuclear or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrable experience carrying out mechanical maintenance, repair and inspection activities.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in confined spaces and at height.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety requirements and safe systems of work.

Qualifications for the Mechanical Fitter:

Essential:

  • A recognised Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship to N/SVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
  • National Certificate in an engineering discipline.

Desirable:

  • Additional qualifications in mechanical engineering, maintenance or manufacturing.
  • Experience working on marine, naval or nuclear systems.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
