Babcock is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Technician -Surveyor to join the Survey team based in Devonport, Auckland

About the role

Join a hands-on engineering role at the heart of marine operations, where your technical expertise directly ensures the safety, structural integrity, and operational performance of naval vessels and engineering assets. You will conduct thorough inspections, tests, and surveys, applying recognized standards to assess material condition, identify risks, and ensure compliance across complex maritime assets.

This is an opportunity to build expertise in marine surveying while contributing to high-impact defence and engineering programmes. Working alongside experienced survey leaders, you’ll support project delivery, manage survey data, and ensure surveys adhere to relevant QA/QC standards to influence and improve quality outcomes. About you

You are a practical, detail-focused engineering professional with solid hands-on experience in mechanical or structural environments. You’re confident conducting inspections, interpreting standards, and assessing defects before they become failures. You enjoy working both independently and as part of a team, supporting project delivery and maintaining high-quality documentation. With strong communication skills and a safety-first mindset, you take ownership of your work, stay organised under pressure, and are motivated to continually improve processes and outcomes.

Key Required Skills

  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques and application
  • Mechanical and structural inspection capability
  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication standards
  • Surveying equipment operation and data interpretation
  • Technical reporting and documentation accuracy
  • Quality assurance and compliance management
  • MS Office and inspection software proficiency
  • Strong communication and stakeholder coordination

Key Required Qualifications

  • Trade or technical qualification in mechanical/fabrication engineering
  • General survey or engineering certification
  • NDT certification (e.g. PCN, AINDT, ASNT, ISO 9712) – desirable
  • Welding inspection certification (e.g. CSWIP, CWI, IIW) – desirable
