Mechanical Design Engineer Intern

Job Purpose:

• Support new RF/Microwave Component and Module level product introductions from concept through production release within the Diode and MMIC Business Units. This individual will provide Micro-electronic Packaging and Mechanical design support to product and design engineers for optimum, cost-effective solutions. This individual may be required to work under direct supervision on product development projects and tasks of limited scope to deliver solutions on schedule for high volume, high mix manufacturing.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support Micro-electronic Packaging and Mechanical design under direct supervision.
• Work with internal Product Design, QA, Reliability, Supply chain and external suppliers to develop, apply and qualify the appropriate technologies and assembly processes, with focus on cost, high volume manufacturability, yield and quality.
• Work with Sourcing Group to qualify vendors for materials and external manufacturing processes.
• Work with Design, Program Management and Material Planning under direct supervision to establish Engineering Build Requirements for new product introductions.
• Provide support to project engineers and technical leads to implement robust assembly processes internally and at contract manufacturers.
• Work with Project Manager in order to maintain up-to-date project plans and schedules.
• Generate design reports, progress reports, test reports, datasheets and bill of materials.
• Generate manufacturing drawings and documentation.
• Design/Develop tooling of limited complexity for a range of assembly processes.
• Lead peer review of design concepts.
• Participate in internal and external (customer) design reviews.
• Work with internal engineering resources to update design rules.
• Work with Quality organization under direct supervision, support the characterization of failure modes and analyze as a function of materials and processes. Support troubleshooting and implement solutions.

Key Competencies Required:

• MS or BS in Mechanical Engineering.
• Interest in design/development/characterization activities from concept to implementation.
• Interest in working with high volume and mixed volume manufacturing operations.
• Conceptual knowledge of process troubleshooting, failure analysis and Six Sigma methodologies (Process mapping, C&E, PFMEA, DOE, SPC).
• Ability to work under direct supervision on tasks and projects of limited complexity.
• Ability to work effectively in a multi-task ownership mode.
• Good written and verbal communication skills. Able to present ideas, design concepts, data and plans with relative confidence to direct supervisor or team lead.
• Good teamwork skills in working together to achieve goals.
• Experience with Solidworks is required. Experience with AutoCad is a plus.
• Experience with solving steady state and dynamic thermal and mechanical problems, using finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software is a plus.
• Experience using Minitab is a plus.
• Fluent with Microsoft Office products.
• Fluency in spoken and written English.
• US citizen or permanent resident required.

• Attend and present at Poster Session about each Interns project successes and pitfalls

The Hourly Range for this position is $20 – $47 per hour. Actual salary offered to candidate will depend on several factors, including but not limited to, work location, relevant candidates’ experience, education, and specific knowledge, skills, and abilities.
