Coherent is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to help develop high‑performance, high‑reliability pump laser modules used in optical communications systems and fibre‑optic network infrastructure. You’ll take products from concept through to volume manufacturing, working at the intersection of precision mechanics, optoelectronics, and advanced packaging.

What You’ll Do

• Design mechanical assemblies and packaging solutions for fibre‑coupled pump laser modules.
• Build and maintain 3D CAD models and detailed mechanical drawings.
• Perform tolerance analysis to ensure manufacturability and long‑term coupling stability.
• Develop parts, fixtures, and jigs to support prototype assembly and characterisation.
• Create thermal and stress models to de‑risk designs and guide development.
• Carry out lab‑based optical testing to validate models and product performance.
• Participate in design reviews, failure analysis, and root‑cause investigations.
• Maintain engineering documentation including drawings, specifications, BOMs, and ECOs.

What You’ll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience designing precision or optoelectronic products.
• Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred).
• Familiarity with FEA for thermal and stress modelling.
• Understanding of tolerance analysis and precision mechanical design.

Bonus Skills

• Experience with laser diode packaging or fibre‑coupled laser modules.
• Knowledge of telecom reliability standards (e.g., Telcordia GR‑468).
• Exposure to high‑volume manufacturing environments.
