Provides mechanical engineering expertise in support of SRP’s hydropower generation assets, with emphasis on turbines, governors, gates, cranes, valves, piping, cooling water, compressed air, lubrication, drainage/dewatering, and balance-of-plant mechanical systems.

Responsible for planning, design, condition assessment, troubleshooting, specification development, project execution, and lifecycle support of mechanical equipment and infrastructure.

Ensures work is completed safely, reliably, in compliance with applicable codes and regulatory requirements, and in a cost-effective manner. Serves as a technical authority and project leader, partnering with Operations, Maintenance, Electrical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, consultants, contractors, vendors, and external partners to sustain and modernize critical water and energy infrastructure.

What You'll Do

  • Performs mechanical engineering design work, engineering studies, and condition assessments for hydropower generation equipment and plant mechanical systems.
  • Serves as engineering project leader for mechanical equipment replacements, rehabilitation projects, reliability improvements, and capital/maintenance work.
  • Develops scopes of work, technical specifications, drawings, calculations, cost estimates, and bid evaluation criteria for mechanical projects.
  • Reviews vendor, consultant, and contractor submittals for technical accuracy, constructability, maintainability, and compliance with SRP standards and project requirements.
  • Provides technical oversight during installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and return-to-service activities for mechanical systems.
  • Evaluates mechanical equipment performance, failure trends, and maintenance history to recommend corrective actions, upgrades, and reliability improvements.
  • Supports inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities for turbines, wicket gates, governors, cranes, valves, piping, pumps, bearings, lubrication systems, cooling water systems, compressed air systems, and other balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Prepares recommendation materials, technical reports, engineering analyses, and presentations for management, project teams, and plant stakeholders.
  • Coordinates closely with Operations, Maintenance, Electrical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, consultants, contractors, vendors, and outside agencies to execute work safely and efficiently
  • Supports regulatory, dam safety, environmental, and workplace safety requirements as they relate to mechanical systems and hydropower generation facilities.
  • Provides field engineering support, including equipment inspections, troubleshooting, outage support, root-cause evaluations, and development of corrective action plans.
  • Mentors less-experienced engineers and provides technical guidance to plant personnel on mechanical systems, maintenance practices, and equipment reliability.

Education

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) or any state or internationally recognized PE registration.

Experience

Minimum 5 years of professional experience actively engaged in engineering practice. Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for the job of Senior Engineer.

Promotion to Level 2 requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level 1; demonstrated capability to perform advanced and more difficult work as determined by the supervisor.

Promotion to Senior Level requires a minimum of three years of experience at Level 2; is fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.

Additional Requirements and Qualifications

Responsible for project budgets and schedules. Occasional contacts with customers and outside agencies. Contacts with suppliers of equipment and services. Occasional travel to suppliers facilities, industry organizational functions and SRP facilities. Ability to work effectively with various organizational groups within SRP. Ability to use engineering tools required for the job (i.e., computer, test equipment, etc.).

Testing and Certifications

Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license.
