Job Description

This part‑time Mechanical Engineering position provides hands‑on support to PHNSY Industrial Engineering and prototyping efforts. The selected candidate will assist with designing, modeling, and fabricating components using modern 3D modeling software, additive‑manufacturing equipment, and rapid‑prototyping tools.

Work involves creating CAD models, preparing geometry for printing, operating 3D printers, performing post‑processing, and assisting with engineering tasks such as basic analysis, measurements, test fits, and documentation. The role supports innovation, prototyping, and engineering development within shipyard support environments.

This position is ideal for a motivated college engineering student seeking practical, real‑world mechanical engineering experience in design, manufacturing, and prototyping.

Required Skills and/or Experience:

• Experience with 3D modeling / CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, or similar).
• Hands‑on experience with 3D printing (FDM and/or resin), including slicer setup and part preparation.
• Understanding of additive manufacturing fundamentals such as materials, tolerances, supports, and build orientation.
• Ability to create engineering drawings, part models, and revision documentation.
• Familiarity with mechanical measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) for basic inspection (preferred, not required).
• Experience with makerspace, machine shop, or prototyping lab environments (preferred).
• Comfortable iterating designs based on feedback and improving part quality.
• Ability to work independently and communicate progress clearly.
• Willingness to learn new engineering tools, fabrication techniques, and shipyard‑specific workflows.
• Must be a US Citizen

Degree Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in a college program pursuing Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Naval Architecture, Materials Science, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
• No completed degree required.
• Students in their sophomore–senior years or early graduate studies are encouraged to apply.
