Overview

Omega Technical Services is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support the design and development of a novel advanced nuclear reactor. This position applies mechanical engineering principles to reactor systems involving heat transfer, gas and fluid flow, solid materials, motion, and system dynamics.

The Mechanical Engineer will develop safe, reliable, efficient, and predictable reactor systems in accordance with applicable engineering requirements, national consensus codes, and industry standards, including the ASME B31 series and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

This position is contingent upon contract award and/or project funding. Candidates may be identified, screened, and submitted prior to award. Employment offers and start dates are dependent upon successful contract award, funding authorization, and client approval.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers supporting the design of a novel advanced reactor.
  • Design and evaluate mechanical systems associated with advanced reactor structures, systems, and components.
  • Support the successful completion, implementation, and verification of engineering projects.
  • Design reactor vessels in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, including high-temperature creep and fatigue considerations.
  • Design and evaluate high-temperature gaskets, seals, bolting, and related mechanical components.
  • Design and document electromechanical devices, including control rod and control drum drive mechanisms.
  • Prepare and maintain controlled engineering models, drawings, specifications, calculations, and design descriptions.
  • Verify that designs conform to established requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Translate project objectives into defined and controlled design requirements using a systems-engineering approach.
  • Apply digital engineering tools to track design requirements, interfaces, and technical parameters.
  • Use recognized engineering methodologies, technologies, and best practices to develop designs and verify that they satisfy defined requirements.
  • Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure that technical features important to system functions are maintained.
  • Oversee or otherwise verify that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement activities are completed in accordance with approved designs.
  • Ensure designs satisfy technical baseline requirements and applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Develop, evaluate, and maintain the technical baseline and configuration management for assigned systems.
  • Ensure consistency among applicable engineering and operational documents, including drawings, technical manuals, operating instructions, and emergency operating procedures.
  • Work with designers, customers, engineers, and analysts to establish experiment requirements and develop conceptual and final designs.
  • Support fabrication, inspection, experiment assembly, installation, and testing activities.
  • Support the development of integrated engineering analyses to demonstrate compliance with applicable facility safety bases.
  • Perform design, fabrication, and related engineering activities supporting reactor operations and experimentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Reactor Project Engineer or Engineering Manager.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field from an ABET-accredited program, plus at least eight years of relevant professional experience; or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field from an ABET-accredited program, plus at least six years of relevant professional experience.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of mechanical system design and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of the ASME B31 series and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Knowledge of engineering design techniques, tools, and principles used to produce technical plans, drawings, blueprints, models, specifications, and calculations.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles involving heat transfer, fluid flow, gas flow, material behavior, and system dynamics.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment used to design and produce mechanical systems and components.
  • Ability to apply established engineering principles and requirements to complex technical problems.
  • Ability to analyze information from multiple sources and develop technically sound conclusions.
  • Ability to recognize existing or potential design, fabrication, and operational problems.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly through written documentation and verbal presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while meeting project schedules and quality requirements.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Satisfactory results of a pre-employment screening, which includes a drug and breath alcohol test, along with a Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.
  • Must be available to travel to the Materials and Fuels Complex as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing nuclear reactor systems, vessels, or related mechanical components.
  • Experience applying the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code to reactor vessel design.
  • Experience evaluating high-temperature creep and fatigue.
  • Experience designing high-temperature gaskets, seals, bolting, or similar mechanical components.
  • Experience designing electromechanical devices such as control rod or control drum drive mechanisms.
  • Experience applying systems-engineering principles and digital engineering tools.
  • Experience with engineering configuration management and technical baseline control.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, assembly, installation, inspection, and testing activities.
  • Experience supporting advanced reactor operations or experimentation.
  • Possession of an active DOE/DoD clearance within the past two (2) years is preferred.
  • Previous DOE/NNSA work experience.

Work Schedule

Shift will be dependent upon customer site discretion.
