Job Description

The Draftsperson supports the design and drafting requirements of a growing fabrication environment, with a focus on producing accurate technical drawings and machine-ready files for workshop production. This role is responsible for preparing DXF, DWG, and STEP files for flat plate and tube laser applications, ensuring outputs are accurate, practical, and aligned with specific machine requirements and workshop processes.

  • Prepare detailed technical drawings and machine-ready files for fabrication and workshop production.
  • Generate DXF or DWG files for plate laser cutting requirements.
  • Generate STEP files for tube laser cutting requirements using suitable 3D modelling software.
  • Ensure STEP files for tube laser work are created as individual components rather than assemblies.
  • Align tube models to one of the 3D coordinate system axes (X, Y, or Z) to ensure correct machine section generation.
  • Interpret technical specifications, dimensions, and production requirements to create accurate drafting outputs.
  • Support drafting requirements associated with new workshop machinery, including tube bevel laser and flatbed laser equipment.
  • Update and revise drawings in line with workshop, production, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Maintain organised drawing files, revisions, and technical documentation.
  • Liaise with workshop and operational teams to ensure drawings and files are fit for purpose and production ready.
  • Support continuous improvement of drafting templates, file preparation standards, and production workflows.
  • Other position-level duties as they arise.

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification in Drafting, Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing, or a related discipline preferred.
  • 3-5+ years’ experience in drafting, technical drawing, or manufacturing documentation roles.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing DXF, DWG, and STEP files for production or fabrication environments.
  • Strong proficiency in 2D and 3D drafting or modelling software such as SolidWorks, TopSolid, Solid Edge, AutoCAD 3D, or similar.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, manufacturing, metalwork, or workshop environments.
  • Ability to prepare production-ready files for laser cutting and related machinery.
  • Strong understanding of file structure, component-level modelling, and drawing accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret technical dimensions, machine requirements, and production specifications accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy.
  • Ability to manage revisions, file control, and structured documentation processes.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with workshop and operational teams.
  • Experience supporting laser cutting, CNC, tube processing, or sheet metal fabrication environments is advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and respond to changing operational priorities.
