Mechanical Designer – P&ID Developer II
Experience Level: 5–10 Years
Location: Atlanta, GA

The Mechanical Designer – P&ID Developer II is responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) that accurately represent piping systems, equipment, instrumentation, and control systems used in industrial processes.
This role works closely with mechanical and process engineers to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of complex industrial systems. The ideal candidate brings 5–10 years of P&ID development experience in industrial or manufacturing environments and strong proficiency with AutoCAD P&ID or similar software.
Key Responsibilities
P&ID Development
- Create and update Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) using industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD P&ID)
- Accurately represent piping layouts, equipment, control systems, and instrumentation
- Develop clear and detailed documentation including:
- Equipment symbols
- Instrument details
- Piping configurations
- Control loops
Collaboration & Coordination
- Work closely with:
- Mechanical Engineers
- Process Engineers
- Project stakeholders
- Interpret design requirements and ensure P&IDs align with engineering specifications
- Clearly communicate design concepts and modifications
Regulatory & Standards Compliance
- Ensure P&IDs comply with:
- Safety regulations
- Industry standards
- Project-specific requirements
- Maintain adherence to applicable codes and best practices
Component & Material Coordination
- Collaborate with engineering teams to select:
- Piping materials
- Valves
- Instruments
- Control components
Change Management & Documentation Control
- Manage revisions and document all updates to P&IDs
- Track version control and ensure stakeholders are informed of changes
- Develop and maintain as-built P&IDs following construction or system modifications
Quality Control
- Review and validate P&IDs for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
- Ensure alignment with project goals and safety guidelines
Training & Mentorship
- Provide training and technical support to junior designers and drafters
- Share best practices in P&ID development and documentation standards
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or related field
- 5–10 years of mechanical design experience with a strong focus on P&ID development
- Proficiency in AutoCAD P&ID or similar P&ID software
- In-depth understanding of:
- Industrial process systems
- Piping systems
- Instrumentation and control systems
- Knowledge of safety regulations and applicable industry standards
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality documentation
