Job Description

This is a project-based employee role supporting the design, integration, and validation of ASI's autonomous reach stacker and yard truck container-handling platforms, including container stacker DC Build and Yard Truck Container Offload efforts. Development phases of this nature typically continue through project completion, often spanning two to four years, although scope and duration are determined by business and customer needs.

The Mechanical Designer III supports the design, documentation, release, and integration of mechanical systems for ASI's autonomous container-handling platforms. This role creates and maintains 3D CAD models, mechanical drawings, assemblies, weldments, brackets, mounts, guards, covers, installation details, bills of materials, and related design documentation needed to build, test, and support autonomous reach stacker and yard truck systems.

As a Level III designer within ASI's five-level structure, this position independently owns moderately complex mechanical design and documentation assignments while receiving guidance on broader system architecture and high-level engineering decisions. The role works closely with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, systems engineers, technicians, manufacturing, test, and field teams to support vehicle integration, sensor mounting, autonomy-kit packaging, container-handling interfaces, and serviceable heavy-equipment designs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create, update, and maintain 3D CAD models, mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, weldment drawings, installation drawings, and fabrication documentation
  • Support mechanical design activities for autonomous reach stacker platforms, container stacker DC Build efforts, and Yard Truck Container Offload systems
  • Design and document brackets, mounts, frames, weldments, panels, covers, guards, enclosures, sensor mounts, compute mounts, cable-routing hardware, and integration components
  • Support mechanical integration of autonomy kits, sensors, compute hardware, electrical panels, wiring routes, antennas, cameras, LiDAR, radar, GPS/GNSS, and other vehicle systems
  • Develop mechanical designs that support container detection, container handling, yard truck interaction, offload workflows, vehicle alignment, service access, and field maintenance
  • Create and maintain bills of materials, part lists, drawing packages, revision records, and release documentation
  • Translate engineering concepts, sketches, redlines, markups, requirements, and field feedback into accurate design models and production-ready drawings
  • Review mechanical designs for fit, function, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, durability, and integration with vehicle systems
  • Support packaging studies, interference checks, clearance reviews, installation planning, and layout work for heavy-equipment platforms
  • Support design of ruggedized components that can withstand vibration, shock, outdoor exposure, heavy-equipment operation, and field-service conditions
  • Incorporate feedback from prototype builds, shop integration, field testing, customer deployments, and technician installation work
  • Support engineering change requests, engineering change orders, drawing releases, and configuration-controlled design updates
  • Work with technicians, fabricators, vendors, and suppliers to resolve questions related to drawings, fit-up, fabrication, installation, and build quality
  • Support prototype assembly, vehicle integration, troubleshooting, and design updates in shop and field environments
  • Coordinate with electrical designers and engineers to ensure mechanical designs support wiring, harness routing, connector access, grounding, mounting, and service needs
  • Coordinate with systems, perception, GNC, test, and field teams to ensure mechanical designs support autonomous operation and validation activities
  • Maintain organized CAD files, drawings, BOMs, documentation records, and configuration-controlled design data
  • Participate in design reviews, build reviews, drawing reviews, and technical discussions related to mechanical system integration
  • Identify design risks, documentation gaps, fit issues, and serviceability concerns and communicate them clearly to the engineering team
  • Support customer deployments, field updates, or system reviews as required
  • Follow ASI design standards, documentation practices, revision-control processes, safety expectations, and quality requirements

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SKILLS

  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting, CAD Design, Manufacturing Technology, or a related technical field
  • Typically five or more years of experience in mechanical design, mechanical drafting, product design, vehicle design, heavy-equipment design, automation systems, or related technical design work
  • Strong experience creating and maintaining 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, assemblies, and mechanical documentation
  • Experience using CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX, CATIA, Onshape, or similar mechanical design platforms
  • Experience designing brackets, mounts, weldments, sheet-metal parts, machined parts, guards, covers, frames, or mechanical assemblies
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, technical specifications, engineering markups, redlines, requirements, and assembly feedback
  • Familiarity with bills of materials, drawing releases, revision control, engineering change processes, and configuration management
  • Understanding of mechanical fit, tolerance, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, durability, and installation requirements
  • Ability to support moderately complex mechanical design assignments with limited day-to-day direction
  • Experience working with engineers, technicians, fabricators, manufacturing teams, test teams, and field personnel
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, complete, and organized technical documentation
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify practical design solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in office, shop, vehicle-integration, and field-support environments as needed

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience designing mechanical systems for reach stackers, yard trucks, container-handling equipment, heavy equipment, autonomous vehicles, robotics, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, or industrial machinery
  • Familiarity with container yards, distribution centers, logistics operations, material handling, container stacking, container pickup, container placement, or trailer/container offload workflows
  • Experience with vehicle integration, retrofit kits, autonomy-kit installation, sensor mounting, compute hardware packaging, or field-serviceable mechanical design
  • Experience designing ruggedized components for vibration, shock, dust, water exposure, outdoor environments, and heavy-equipment operation
  • Experience with weldments, sheet metal, machined components, castings, bolted joints, fasteners, and structural mounting interfaces
  • Experience performing packaging studies, interference checks, tolerance reviews, and service-access reviews
  • Familiarity with electrical integration needs, including cable routing, connector access, enclosure mounting, grounding, and sensor placement
  • Experience supporting prototype builds, vehicle retrofits, customer-site updates, or field installation work
  • Experience with PLM, PDM, ERP, Jira, Confluence, or similar engineering documentation and issue-tracking systems
  • Experience working with suppliers, machine shops, fabricators, or production teams to support build and release activities
  • Experience supporting design updates based on test results, field issues, customer feedback, or production feedback
