At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.
Who We Are
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We'reworking to do that by making access to space cheaper and more reliable through reusable launch vehicles. Join our team of problem solvers as we add our next generation of launch vehicles and in-space systems to our fleet.
The Role
We are seeking a MechanicalDesign Engineer to join ourteam The core challenge is achieving rotational performance at a scale andspeedthat has not beendemonstratedbefore.
This is a hands-ondetaileddesign role built for someone who thrives in rapiddevelopment cycles. You willdesign, build, test, learn, andredesign — repeat. Success is measuredby hardware on the test standanddata in hand, not bydocuments alone.
Responsibilities
Owndetailedmechanicaldesign of a high-speedrotor assembly including structural members, retention features, balance provisions, andthermal management.
Develop anditerate thermal management solutions
Understandthermal andstructural loads on the rotor; translate those intodesign requirements andgeometry constraints
Authordrawings, GD&T, assembly procedures, andacceptance criteria with sufficient rigor to buildandtest hardware quickly
Define andexecute component- andsystem-level test plans; be present for test operations, teardowns, andinspection
Drive rapiddesign-build-test cycles —identifyfailure modes early, propose trades, andexecute changes fast
Coordinate with manufacturing andsupply chain to produce hardware on aggressive schedulesandrateswithout sacrificing structural or thermal integrity
Participate in failure investigations andcontribute to root cause analysis andcorrective action
Basic Qualifications
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or closely relatedfield
3+ years of experience in mechanicaldesign of rotating machinery
Demonstratedunderstanding of rotor structural mechanics, including centrifugal loading, retentiondesign, andfit/preloadstrategies for components with thermal sensitivity
Proficiencywith 3DCAD(CREO, NX,CATIA, SolidWorks, or equivalent) anddrawing/GD&T per ASME Y14.5
Experience authoring andexecuting hardware test plans andparticipatinghands-on in test operations
Experiencewithdesign for manufacturing anddesign to cost.
Comfortable with fast iteration:designing to 80%, building hardware, learning fromdata, andrapidly incorporating findings
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admittedinto the U.S. as a refugee or grantedasylum
PreferredQualifications
Experiencedesigning integratedcooling features within rotating assemblies — internal flow passages, thermal interfaces, or conduction paths under rotation
Familiaritywith highandlow-cyclefatigue andfracture mechanics for rotating componentsoperatingat high peripheral velocities
Experience with composite or advancedalloy materials in high-stress rotating environments
Backgroundin rapidhardwaredevelopment programs with shortdesign-build-test cycles andfrequentdesign updates
Rotordynamicsexperience — critical speedanalysis, unbalance response, bearing loadestimation
Base Pay Range for:
WA applicants is $121,023.00 - $169,432.20
