Job Description

What to Expect

Tesla’s Full Self Driving computer is the backbone of our hardware autonomy platform and is the physical link between custom silicon and the rest of the vehicle. Our compute modules pack high-power chips into tight vehicle packaging, while balancing optimization of thermal, electrical, manufacturing, and service constraints. Tesla’s fast-paced development environment creates opportunities to deliver novel and often-patented technologies to millions of vehicles, making a meaningful impact on the safety and sustainability of global transportation. As a Mechanical Design Engineer on this team, you will own the design of liquid-cooled vehicle compute assemblies all the way from the sensitive thermo-mechanical silicon stack-up to the structural mounting of the computer in the vehicle. You will collaborate deeply with other vehicle subsystems as well as silicon development and validation teams to deliver vertically integrated products that are among the most efficient in the world. We are seeking creative and self-motivated engineers with strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and first principles thinking, to take products through the design, prototype, manufacturing, test, and production ramp cycle.

What You’ll Do

  • Own mechanical design of FSD computer assemblies: coldplates & coolant interfaces, enclosure castings & stampings, connectors, and related parts, including development of 3D CAD and 2D drawings
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to define product requirements, integrate and package multiple PCBAs in vehicle contexts, and develop cooling solutions for high performance custom silicon
  • Perform tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other simulations and analyses before releasing designs for production
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with suppliers and support tooling bring up
  • Optimize components for high volume production, while considering performance, design, integration, size, mass, assembly and more
  • Participate in prototype builds, component fabrication, testing and validation efforts. Provide hands-on support at both prototype and production stages
  • Support development of engineering and reliability test plans, test data analysis, and troubleshooting of design issues

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated successful experience in mechanical engineering product development, including part design and in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, die casting, stamping, brazing, etc.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamental knowledge including materials stress/strain, mechanics & statics, and heat transfer
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented personality with solid documentation and reporting skills
  • Proficiency in tolerance analysis, quality control, data and statistical analysis, failure analysis, and GD&T
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling and analysis; CATIA and ANSYS experience highly valued but not required
  • Experience with PLM systems, engineering changes, deviations, BOM structuring, etc.
  • 5-10% of travel is expected
