Purpose Statement

The Design Engineer is responsible for designing and improving refiner plates for refiners and mills to meet customer performance requirements and support optimal equipment performance, durability, and fiber processing quality. This role develops plate patterns, drawings, and specifications while ensuring proper form, fit, and function and compliance with company safety guidelines. The position works closely with Product Managers, Sales, Manufacturing, and Engineering to incorporate customer, technical, and operational requirements into engineering products and supports troubleshooting, product development, and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Requires design skills.
  • Design refiner plates, from existing 2D to Cimatron 3D.
  • Produce engineering drawings and meet specifications for pattern data base.
  • Produce Sales support information such as inch-cuts and photo sheets.
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing, Sales and customers.
  • Use design software Cimatron to create or modify existing files.
  • Maintain office records and files to rigging file by family by pattern.
  • Follow pattern priority list base on next available drawing.
  • Follow all continuous improvements to meet the best practice methods.
  • Review other drafters’ drawings to control check list by product type.
  • Work closely with CNC Manager to meet expectation for expediting fabrication of pattern(s).
  • Must be available for off-site trainings and customer visits.

Education, professional experience and qualification preferred/required

  • Associate or Trade School Degree in Drafting or Engineering.
  • Five plus (5+) years machine design / drafting experience, preferred.
  • Proficient in various software packages: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Project and AutoCAD.
  • Requires knowledge of CNC programming with Cimatron and pattern making principles.
  • High capacity of strategic, logical, and methodical thinking, and independent decision making skills for problem solving.
  • Must be organized, able to manage time, prioritize, pay close attention to detail, maintain a high degree of accuracy, and work as a team member or independently while handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment, follow direction with little to no supervision, and continually meet the quality standards of the Company.
  • Comply with all Company policies, procedures, regard confidentiality and safety requirements at all times.
  • Represent Company interests and be sensitive to internal and external customer satisfaction (understand sense of urgency and importance of follow-up).

Physical and Mental Qualifications

Work is primarily conducted in an office environment, however, will require time in a manufacturing plant with exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, dust, dirt, fumes, heavy duty magnets, welding machines, and manual/remote controlled devices using radio signals. Candidate is required to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, ascend/descend stairs, and routinely lift up to of 50 lbs. Must possess excellent mobility, solid visual acuity, good hearing, coordination, and manual dexterity, and ability to endure extended work hours when required (working safely and efficiently at all times as well as wearing the required personal protective equipment).
