Mechanical Design Engineer
Tetra Tech is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to design the infrastructure that powers the energy transition.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the delivery of technically complex mechanical and pipeline design across energy and utilities projects. This role focuses on gas, district heating, biomethane, hydrogen and wider buried and above-ground infrastructure. You will contribute to preliminary and detailed design, calculations, reporting, options assessment and project delivery support, working closely with senior engineers, clients and multidisciplinary teams. Day to day, you will help shape practical, compliant and sustainable design solutions that meet client requirements, planning constraints and applicable standards.
This is a Dublin-based role within a growing Energy and Utilities team of around 50 people, including a district gas heating sub-team of approximately 10. The portfolio covers regulated and technically demanding projects for major utility clients, ranging from feasibility and pre-FEED studies through to detailed design, delivery support and remediation works. The role is suited to someone with around three to five years’ experience, although candidates with up to around ten years’ relevant experience may also be considered where they bring strong technical and delivery capability.
Your Impact in this position
In the short term, you will build confidence in technical delivery, deepen your knowledge of relevant standards and gain direct exposure to client-facing work on significant infrastructure projects. In the medium term, you will take greater ownership of work packages, support project coordination, lead smaller commissions and strengthen your report writing and decision-support skills. Over the longer term, you can progress into broader project management and technical leadership roles, while contributing to innovative, sustainability-led work that supports Ireland’s energy transition and critical infrastructure resilience.
Core Capabilities
Technical Mechanical Design
Engineering Standards and Analytical Thinking
Reporting, Documentation and Technical Communication
Multidisciplinary Coordination and Project Support
Client Engagement, Professional Judgement and Development Mindset
Training, Qualifications and Experience
A degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, is essential, along with around three to five years’ relevant post-graduate experience in mechanical, utilities or infrastructure engineering. Strong written and spoken English is required. Chartered status, or active progress towards it, would be an advantage, as would experience in gas, district heating, water, hydrogen or biomethane projects. Familiarity with AutoCAD, 3D modelling, stress analysis tools or similar engineering software would also be beneficial.
Working Environment
This is a Dublin-based role with hybrid working available. During probation, full-time office attendance is expected. Once probation is complete, the usual pattern is two to three days in the office each week, with the remainder worked flexibly in line with project needs. Occasional site visits, client meetings and attendance at project locations will be required. Flexible working may be considered, but the role is primarily office-based and is not suitable for fully remote working.
