Job Description

At GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH), we are united by a single, urgent, and optimistic mission: electrify to thrive and decarbonize. The world needs us to accelerate the transition to more reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. Together, we have the energy to change the world.
We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineer to support structural analysis activities for reactor pressure vessel and internal components in the advanced nuclear business. You will work closely with a diverse technical team to perform engineering analyses that demonstrate compliance with the ASME BPVC Section III and generate dynamic loads due to seismic and large pipe break. This position provides the opportunity to work on safety-critical components and contribute to the development and deployment of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies. You will also collaborate with cross-disciplinary Engineering Teams to ensure successful execution of assigned engineering tasks in support of the SMR projects.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Execute analyses for assigned projects using sound engineering principles, while adhering to established business standards, practices, procedures, and program requirements.
  • Perform structural and stress analyses for reactor pressure vessels and internal components using finite element analysis (FEA) tools and closed form equations.
  • Develop and run ANSYS FEA models to evaluate both mechanical and thermal stresses under various service level conditions.
  • Perform engineering evaluations on stress and fatigue to demonstrate compliance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III, primarily Subsection NG, with some exposure to NB, NCD, and NF requirements.
  • Generate dynamic loads for the reactor pressure vessel and other components due to earthquake and large pipe break.
  • Develop creative solutions and reduce analysis complexity to create accurate and effective solutions for complex engineering problems.
  • Prepare technical reports, calculation packages, and documentation supporting regulatory and design requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including design engineers, system engineers, project managers, and external partners to complete assigned design activities.
  • Engage internal stakeholders and vendors/suppliers to define scope, review results, and discuss technical risks.
  • Liaise with customers, in partnership with engineering leadership and Project Management.
  • Improve areas of project execution through lean methodology and Design to Cost principles.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced engineers to increase overall knowledge while assuring a successful outcome.
  • Take responsibility of workplans, defining scope of work and schedule

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or other engineering discipline from an accredited college or University.
  • Proven experience performing structural analysis.
  • Experience conducting finite element analysis (FEA), including evaluation of mechanical and thermal loadings, preferably using ANSYS Workbench or APDL.
  • Experience in Nuclear field.
  • Fluent communication in English and Polish.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or greater in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or University.
  • Nuclear Power Industry knowledge / experience.
  • Experience performing mechanical analysis using ANSYS and APDL, stress analysis, seismic and dynamic analysis, heat transfer, non-linear systems, vibrations, and fatigue.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives, effectively facilitate meetings and provide coaching and mentoring to less experienced coworkers.
  • Working knowledge of the ASME Section III subsection NG/NB/NCF/NF.
  • ASME Section III Class 1 Fatigue design experience.
  • Experience with performing High Energy Line Break Analysis.
  • Working knowledge of scripting tools such as PROCD, Python, VBA, MATLAB, etc.
  • A self-starter willing to take initiative.
