Mechanic Specialist (Buena Vista)
The Mechanic Specialist position is based at the Otero Pump Station and supports the Homestake Water Project, a partnership between Colorado Springs Utilities and Aurora Water. Therefore, the selected candidate must reside in the general vicinity of Buena Vista, Colorado, to meet the service territory requirements. The Mechanic Specialist will install, maintain, repair, and operate pump station equipment and pipelines, and is also responsible for operating construction equipment. A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
This position is essential to the transmission of the finest water to our customers in Colorado Springs and Aurora, Colorado. Your expert mechanical knowledge will be utilized to ensure the effective operation and maintenance of the equipment across our system.
This position requires the successful candidate to work standby and overtime as needed.
In this position, you will be responsible for:
- Maintaining and troubleshooting large raw water pumping systems, valves, and pipelines
- Performing work outdoors and indoors. Assignments are characterized by intermittent exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous mountain driving conditions, frequent bending, heavy lifting, high noise levels, and noxious fumes. Winter conditions may require considerable walking in deep snow, involving the use of snowshoes
- Adjusting valves and headgates to manage water releases out of Dams and collection ponds, inspecting and cleaning flumes, ditches, and trash racks
- Assisting with the installation, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a variety of mechanical equipment, pumps, valves, piping, heavy equipment, and vehicles, which support the Homestake Water Project water collection and delivery system
- Inspecting plant equipment, pumps, valves, motors, compressors, and construction equipment, to trace and locate malfunctions
- General cleaning; custodial duties
- Transporting and operating construction equipment
- Performing maintenance involving welding, metal fabrication, carpentry, painting, HVAC, plumbing, concrete, and other related building repairs
- Managing a preventive maintenance program
- Complying with the safety and health program in support of an incident and injury-free workplace
- Performing other duties and, responsibilities as assigned

What will it take to be successful?
- Demonstrated years of progressively responsible mechanical equipment and plant maintenance experience and be willing to enter training to learn all duties of a Mechanic Specialist for Homestake operations.
- Experience in heavy equipment operation is preferred.
- A valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B (CDLN), liquid bulk/cargo Tank, and air brakes are required.)
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDLN)-liquid bulk/cargo Tank is preferred)
- Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- This position typically requires: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
- This position may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, and intense noises.
- Very Heavy Work: Exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
