The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) of the Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking Seasonal Mechanics to support the Division’s Fleet Management and Trades work program.

Seasonal Mechanics assist with the routine servicing, maintenance, and repair of the vehicles, mowers, tractors, trailers, and small engine equipment used to maintain parks and recreation facilities. Work is performed at Division maintenance facilities under the direction of experienced Automotive/Equipment Mechanics and shop supervisors.

This is an ideal opportunity for individuals with hands-on mechanical interest or experience, students enrolled in automotive, diesel, or small engine technology programs, and candidates seeking practical experience in fleet and equipment maintenance.

Examples of duties

  • Assist with preventive maintenance on cars, trucks, mowers, tractors, trailers, and other equipment, including oil, filter, and fluid changes and chassis lubrication
  • Assist with tire service, including inflating, rotating, changing, and repairing tires on vehicles and equipment
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of small engine equipment such as mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, and blowers, including replacing broken parts and sharpening blades
  • Replace or charge batteries and replace belts, hoses, filters, lights, and other basic components under supervision
  • Assist experienced mechanics with the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of components during repairs
  • Clean, degrease, and paint equipment; maintain a clean and organized shop, tool room, and work area
  • Move, stage, and test drive vehicles and equipment within the facility as assigned
  • Assist with parts inventory, including receiving, stocking, and pulling parts and supplies for assigned jobs
  • Record work performed and equipment data on work orders, logs, and electronic maintenance records
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and properly and wear all required personal protective equipment
  • Report mechanical problems, safety hazards, and damaged equipment to the shop supervisor
  • Follow established safety procedures, environmental requirements for handling fluids and waste, and departmental guidelines
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
  • Able to perform the physical requirements of the work.
  • Completion of an approved mechanical apprentice program

Preferred

  • Previous experience performing automotive, small engine, or equipment maintenance, including experience gained through school, military service, or personal projects
  • Enrollment in or completion of an automotive, diesel, or small engine technology program
  • Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Interest in fleet maintenance, skilled trades, or parks operations

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic automotive, small engine, and equipment maintenance practices
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and established shop safety procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to lift and move parts, tools, and equipment and to work in a shop environment for extended periods
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail

Work hours

  • Work schedules vary by assignment and operational needs. Seasonal hours are not guaranteed and may fluctuate based on program needs.

Working Conditions/Environment

  • Work is performed primarily in a vehicle and equipment maintenance shop, with some work performed outdoors. Duties may involve exposure to weather conditions, noise, dust, fumes, grease, solvents, and fuels, and physical activity including lifting, bending, kneeling, standing, and working in confined spaces for extended periods.

About Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a bi-county agency empowered by the State of Maryland in 1927 to acquire, develop, maintain and administer a regional system of parks within Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, and to provide land use planning for the physical development of these counties. The agency gained responsibility for public recreation program in Prince George's County in 1970.

Governing Body

The governing body of M-NCPPC consists of 10 members, 5 appointed by Montgomery County and 5 by Prince George's County. The Commission coordinates & acts on matters of interest to both counties, and meets at least once a month. The members of the Commission from each county serve as separate Planning Boards to facilitate, review and administer the matters affecting their respective counties.

Range of Duties

M-NCPPC administers a park system of more than 52,000 acres. It is composed of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and park-school recreation areas. Its staff of career employees includes planners, park and recreation administrators, park police and administration staff. In addition, seasonal workers staff numerous park and recreation programs.
