Job Description
The Mechanic B supports the Mechanic A and higher titles in various maintenance functions in the power plant including electrical, mechanical and welding.
Core Responsibilities
- The Mechanic B will pursue a career path qualifying as the senior title in that career path.
- Mechanic B (Welding) must have a minimum of two years of welding experience and qualified in API1104. Willing to further welding skills, as the need for such welding specifications is required by the department. Interpret welding specifications, standards and procedures and work unsupervised to complete assignments. Perform welding tasks and various mechanical duties on live steam, gas and electric facilities.
- Mechanic B (Mechanical) will work on mechanical equipment in maintaining, repairing and installing power piping systems, associated valves, tanks and vessels and various types of rotating mechanical equipment such as fans, blowers, pumps, motors, etc. using various field power tools and precision measuring equipment.
- Mechanic B (Electrical) will work on the electrical equipment to install, repair and maintain utility electrical equipment, read schematic drawings and engineering prints using testing devices to troubleshoot problems within electrical components, circuits or equipment.
- Knowledge in the following areas: confined space entry, basic pumps, coupling alignment, bearing maintenance, pipe fitting, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, scaffolding, mechanical drawing, boiler tube repair, math and industrial safety, machine shop, conduit bending, basic electricity, scaffolding, skyclimber/hanging platforms, crane operation and welding (GTAW, SMAW).
- Obtain both the New York State and New York City Asbestos Handler's License.
- Drive a company vehicle to work locations, when required.
- Gain knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC).
- Gain welding experience and obtain license, as required.
- Able to work weekends, midnight shifts and overtime, when necessary.
Required Education/Experience
- High School Diploma/GED and Minimum 3 years related work experience (Mechanical/Electrical) Experience in a power plant, US Navy, or maritime environment or
- High School Diploma/GED and Minimum 3 years related work experience with at least 2 years of welding experience and qualified in API1104 (Welding) Experience in a power plant, US Navy, or maritime environment with welding and qualification in API1104
Relevant Work Experience
- Possess New York FDNY burning and fireguard license. Required
- Must be qualified or be willing to take and pass a brazing qualification test. (Welding) Required
- Must be qualified or be willing to take and pass an Inconel metal welding test. (Welding) Required
- Must be qualified or be willing to take and pass a forklift driving test. Required
- 2 years' of welding experience and qualified in API1104 (Welding) Required
Licenses and Certifications
- Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
- Must respond to system emergencies
- Must work at field locations in all weather conditions
- Must perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Must perform heavy manual labor; i.e. pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds
- Must carry tools and materials, climb ladders and scaffolds, and enter confined spaces
- Must work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Must work with and in the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Must be approved and able to wear either a full- or half-face respirator without facial hair or other condition that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations.
- Must walk, stand, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach
- Must use hand tools and operate heavy equipment,i.e. jackhammers
- Must wear all necessary personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including; fire retardant clothing and safety harness
- Must work with equipment with manufacturer weight rating of 350 llbs.
- Must be able to use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375 lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment.
Additional Physical Demands
- Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be capable of extensive driving of a welding truck.
- This position will involve rotating shifts, extended overtime, overnight and weekend assignments.
