Job Description

About the role
In this role, you will you'll be responsible for servicing, repairing, and maintaining the Council’s assets. Working autonomously under the guidance of the Mechanic in Charge, you'll demonstrate exceptional workmanship, customer service, and flexibility. While most tasks will involve scheduled maintenance, your ability to troubleshoot and work under pressure is key to minimising vehicle downtime and ensuring smooth operations across the city.

Classification: Band 4 $76,010 (from 1 July 2026) pa plus super

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertake effective scheduled servicing, repairs and maintenance of Council’s fleet of vehicles, heavy plant and equipment in a professional, commercially minded and customer focused manner in Council’s Fleet workshops in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations or established procedures.
  • Provide professional and efficient roadside breakdown services for Council’s fleet of vehicles, heavy plant and equipment.
  • Ensure all workshop plant, equipment and tools are operated, maintained, stored and secured in a safe manner and in accordance with all relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all of Council’s policies and procedures, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Provide information and training to employees and apprentices, as required, to enable them to carry out required maintenance activities on vehicles, plant and equipment.
  • Ensure that all workshop time sheets and repair dockets are completed accurately and submitted timely.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have a Certificate III trade qualification as an Automotive Technician, Diesel Fitter or Mobile Plant mechanic. You will also have:

  • A current Victorian unrestricted car, medium rigid, heavy rigid or heavy combination driver’s licence.
  • Ability to perform manual work, including the lifting of weights, in accordance with the relevant Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Extensive experience in the servicing, maintenance and repair of wide range of vehicles, plant and equipment.
  • Current Working with Children Check (Employee).
  • Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check and a pre-employment medical assessment as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
