About This Position:

As a Mechanic 3 (Marine/Heavy Equipment Mechanic) with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), you will play an important role in supporting ferry operations by maintaining and repairing the marine equipment that keeps ferries safely in service. You will perform advanced diagnostic, repair, and overhaul work on diesel engines, pumps, outdrives, gears, and other critical marine systems to ensure reliable operation of DOTD’s ferry fleet.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Supplemental information

Job Duties:

  • Troubleshoots and repairs major and non-typical problems on diesel engines, pumps and other marine equipment in order to keep the ferries in service. This includes changing all coolers, adjusting governors, rebuilding engines, changing heads, and braking down equipment and diagnosing problems, etc
  • Directs and oversees the rebuilding and repair of marine equipment in the marine repair shop, such as pumps, outdrives, gears, etc...
  • Develops parts, tools and supply lists to able to repair marine equipment. Also to keep spare parts supply for emergency outages.
  • Provides technical support and training to marine operations staff and marine trades helpers

CompensationBelow is the starting hourly rate.

  • M echanic 3 - $21.05 up to $33.68

Applicants with extraordinary qualifications may be eligible for appointment above the minimum rate in accordance with Civil Service Rule 6.5(g).
