Position Responsibilities
In summer, responsible for day-to-day shop operations. In winter, responsible for the operation and supervision of the winter-over operations of the MEC.
Responsible for the maintenance and repair of, but not limited to, snowmobiles, ATVs, and/or maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel generators, up to 100kw in size, and portable gasoline and diesel heaters, ice drills, chainsaws, and other small equipment.
May berequiredto perform TDY in the Denver headquarters office in preparation for upcoming field seasons.
Provides direct supervision of maintenance and operations activities on all winter-over activities within the MEC. Provides direction to floor mechanics on a day-to-day basis during the Austral summer while working under the Supervisor MEC.
Provides direct supervision of all MEC mechanics, in the absence of the Supervisor of MEC, including the handling of personnel issues.
Assigns tasks, coordinates the flow of work, and inspects the quality of workmanship on equipment.
Supervises the work of all mechanics, skilled workers and helpers engaged in the repair and upkeep of MEC Science Support equipment.
Ensures work request priorities arecomplied with
Monitors all in-progress work to ensure quality,timelycompletionand control of material.
Documents work order progress.
Prepares andsubmitsreports on the progress of all new and on-going work projects.
Generates and approves requisitions for supplies and equipment.
Handles confidential matters (personnelactions, managementreports, etc.)in accordance withmanagement policy.
Performs duties in support of ASC metrics. Trains and orients subordinate employees on performance, documentation and activities that effect the achievement of ASC metrics.
Supports the achievement of metrics, whether metrics can be directly or indirectly affected by this position's activities.
Provides direct support, using staffresources,if necessary, to the achievement of all metrics related to program.
Complies withall Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
Ensures that all subordinate employees are trained in, and understand Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance requirements and goals.
Maintains documentation as necessary to meet these requirements.
Performs maintenance, diagnosis and repair of generators and small equipment. Performs diagnosis and repair of snowmobiles, ATVs.
Performs rebuilds on engines, drivetrainsor components of equipment.
Provides training for personnel on the safe use of the above equipment.
Provides training in operation and field maintenance to grantees and support personnel.
Performs on-site work to equipment in field asrequired
Provides training as needed to mechanics.
Documents all work performed andmaintainspertinent records.
Assesses suitability of equipment to grantee needs, designing and implementing modifications and custom fabrications asrequired
Operates andmaintainsshop equipment, including welders, compressors, presses, etc.
Maintains adequate supply of spare parts and tools, in coordination with the materials person.

Responsible for implementing andmaintaininga safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

RequiredEducation, Experience, Certificates and Licenses
High School diploma orGED
Minimum of five years of experience in equipment maintenance, withat leastthreeof thoseyearsat the supervisory level
ExpectedSkills and Competencies:
Complies withapplicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedure.
Proficient usingMicrosoft OfficeWord; ability to accurately document changes to work orders and inventory on a computer-based system.
Preferred
Training at aTechnical school
Experience with diesel, two and four stroke engines;maintainingsmall engines
Experience with electrical power generation
Experience rebuilding engines
Experience rebuilding gear cases and drive trains
Able to read and understand wiring schematics
Able to teach end users how to use and fieldmaintainequipment
Understanding of inventory management
Physical and/or Other Requirements
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
Mustparticipatein community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safetyobjectives
Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
Must be able to obtain andmaintainfacility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship isrequiredfor facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
