Position Type: Full TimePosition Overview:
The Meat Cutter Apprentice is a structured, entry-level training role designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience required to become a fully proficient Meat Cutter. Over the course of a one-year apprenticeship, the apprentice will receive hands-on training, formal feedback, and progressive skill development under the guidance of the Meat Manager and experienced team members.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: (not an exhaustive list)
- Assist in preparing, cutting, trimming, and packaging meat products according to department standards
- Learn and apply proper knife handling, cutting techniques, and safe operation of equipment
- Support product merchandising by stocking, rotating, and maintaining visually appealing displays
- Ensure all products are properly labeled, priced, and meet quality standards
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment:
- - Clean cases, shelves, bins, tables, coolers, and floors on a regular schedule
- - Follow strict sanitation practices, including frequent handwashing and use of protective gloves
- Follow all food safety and workplace safety procedures and guidelines
- Assist with inventory management, including receiving, storing, and rotating product properly
Learning & Development Focus:
- Progressive training in meat fabrication, trimming, portioning, and presentation
- Developing extensive knowledge of meat products, vendors, and sourcing
- Building expertise in cooking methods and product utilization to better serve customers
- Food safety, sanitation standards, and regulatory compliance
- Customer engagement and consultative service skills
- Time management and production efficiency

QualificationsRequired Skills/Experience and Attributes:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Must be 18 years or older
- Ability to represent the Co-op in a positive manner
- Demonstrated interest in learning a skilled trade within the food or grocery industry
- Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality
- Basic math skills for weighing, portioning, and pricing
- Previous retail, food service, or grocery experience preferred but not required
