Job Description

Measurement Engineering Internship

At Colorado Springs Utilities, the work of Measurement Engineering offers a unique opportunity for college students to bridge the gap between electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering disciplines. This role is critical as it touches all three of our commodities, Electric, Gas, and Water, providing a comprehensive view of how we measure, monitor, and manage our metering infrastructure to support the meter to cash cycle.

This work is unique in that it requires a blend of data analytics, hardware testing, and field operations. Developing talent in this niche field has historically been difficult; therefore, this internship is designed not only to support immediate project needs but to cultivate a local talent pipeline for future Engineer positions.

This is a Summer + School Year position; it requires 40 hours/week from May through August, transitioning to 10–20 hours/week during the academic year. This structure is essential for maintaining momentum on the Aging Infrastructure project and ensuring the student gains solid experience for future opportunities.

A Measurement Engineering Internship offers the following learning opportunities:

  • Triple-Service Exposure: A rare chance to learn measurement principles across Electric, Gas, and Water systems simultaneously
  • Data Analytics & Revenue Protection: Gaining skills in Meter Data Management (MDM) to identify consumption anomalies and protect utility revenue
  • Project Lifecycle Management: Exposure to large-scale capital projects, specifically the logistics and financial analysis of aging infrastructure replacement
  • Next-Generation Technology: Hands-on experience testing and validating the latest metering hardware against manufacturer specifications
  • Validation of meter health, analyze complex data sets for water loss and revenue impact, and help modernize our technical training curriculum

The following engineering degree tracks will be considered for this role - bachelor's in electrical, civil or mechical engineering

Learning Objectives:

  • Utility Measurement Fundamentals: Gain a working knowledge of the operational principles behind electric, gas, and water metering systems
  • Data Analysis & Integrity: Learn how to interpret raw meter data, identify anomalies (diversion/zero consumption), and utilize Meter Data Management (MDM) systems
  • Hardware Validation: Acquire hands-on experience in a testing environment, learning how to validate manufacturer accuracy claims against utility standards for next-gen hardware
  • Project Management: Understand the lifecycle of a capital utility project by supporting the Aging Water Infrastructure initiative
  • Technical Communication: Develop skills in translating complex engineering concepts into training documentation and standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Learning Activities:

  • Structured Mentorship & Shadowing: Rotate through Electric, Gas, and Water Measurement Engineering disciplines to observe field testing, installation, and troubleshooting alongside subject matter experts
  • MDM Training and data integrity work sessions: Guided access to meter data and systems, with a focus on data integrity, cleaning Meter Data Management (MDM) alerts (zero consumption, diversion) to learn root-cause analysis techniques
  • Hands-on Technical Application: Dedicated lab and shop time to test next-generation metering hardware (electric/gas) and validate performance against manufacturer specifications
  • Capstone Project (Continuous Improvement): The intern will own a significant operational project based on current business needs. Potential focus areas include:
    • Aging Infrastructure Analysis: Monitoring the deployment of the aging water meter project, specifically tracking water loss data and calculating the financial impact of improved measurement accuracy
    • Training & Knowledge Management: Auditing existing technical documentation to develop a modernized "Measurement Engineering Progression Guide" and curriculum for future hires

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or small amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
- Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions within an office working environment.

*This is an on-site, non-remote/non-telecommuting position
*Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc.
