This position is responsible for the review and coordination of child abuse and neglect cases and is established to improve communication across agency lines, ensure accountability within the team response and to enhance services for child victims and their non-offending family members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze child abuse and neglect reports received by law enforcement and child protective services pursuant to Neb. Rev. Stat. §28-710
  • Assist the county attorney in facilitating regular case reviews and arranging for training opportunities for the multidisciplinary team. Regularly evaluate multi-disciplinary team membership and ensure that relevant disciplines are included. Recruit new multi-disciplinary team members as needed
  • Work with the Coordination Team to continuously identify and evaluate goals and outcomes
  • Provide case coordination in Douglas County Juvenile Court as needed for Impact from Infancy Program cases:
  • Attend court hearings, as needed
  • Assist case managers with service referrals
  • Provide information to case professionals and judges on services and interventions targeted at families with children birth to five
  • Communicate recommendations to case professionals and judges
  • Prepare reports, as needed or requested
  • Submit reports as requested regarding frequency, outcomes and recommendations of the multi-disciplinary team case review as well as for improvement in protocols and practices
  • Timely input of case information related to goals and outcomes into agency database
  • Work closely and collaboratively with system partners
  • Assist in identifying training needs for child welfare staff, attorneys and judges about child development, trauma, parent-child relationships, availability of community services and resources for children and families and other best practice trainings, as needed
  • Participation in community committees and advisory boards
  • Ensure culturally competent services are provided without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, disability, gender or sexual orientation
  • Other MDT Coordinator duties as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in social work, early childhood education, criminal justice, psychology or related field required

Experience and Training

  • Training or experience in team facilitation and mediation skills is preferred
  • Previous professional experience working in early childhood preferred
  • Previous experience in working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Previous professional experience related to the investigation and treatment of child abuse cases

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of infancy/early childhood development including the impact of trauma
  • Knowledge and understanding of various evidence-based trauma-informed care therapy models will be helpful
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills (verbal, written and active listening) to include knowledge in facilitating difficult conversations
  • Effective communication/comfort with public speaking
  • Demonstrate problem solving skills and ability to resolve conflicts
  • Stable, resilient and flexible under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal and decision-making skills
  • High level of initiative and energy
  • High level of professionalism
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Demonstrate use of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel
  • Must respect and maintain confidentiality

Other

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours
  • Must submit and successfully pass a criminal history background check
  • Must have access to a vehicle, possess a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
  • Position may involve some travel, primarily within the state

About Project Harmony Child Protection Center

Project Harmony Child Protection Center is a community-based organization providing child-friendly, centralized and integrated child abuse assessment and investigation for children throughout eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Project Harmony works with state human services and local law enforcement agencies to protect the child and prosecute the offender. This past year, 8,064 children sought services at Project Harmony.

Since the opening of Project Harmony in 1996 more than 64,000 children have received vital services in prevention and child abuse assessment, investigation and treatment referral. Prosecution rates have increased and abused children and their families are able to get professional help in the process of healing.

The Project Harmony Training Institute was established in 2007 and since that time more than 30,000 students, citizens and professionals have been taught the best methods to assess and respond to children and their families who have been impacted by abuse and neglect.

Project Harmony and its partner agencies work together to serve families throughout the communities of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. This collaborative effort provides effective, immediate and sensitive support to child victims and their non-offending family members, improved communication and case resolution.
