Summary

This internship will focus on data, policies, procedures, and other health plan oversight that impact people who have both Medicare and Medicaid. The student will have an opportunity to view how an integrated healthcare program is administered and how to use data to inform health plan oversight and program direction.

The selected intern would meet weekly with the MI Coordinated Health Contracts and Quality Manager to discuss progress on assigned projects. Weekly meetings will be held through video conferencing, and periodic in-person meetings will take place in Lansing. The intern would attend staff meetings, internal group meetings with other partners in central office, and external group meetings with contracted Health Plans and other stakeholders. Projects aim to support contract oversight of health plan performance and may include:

• Tracking and trending State Fair Hearings and related data.
• Tracking and trending health plan data privacy and security incidents.
• Tracking and trending Contract Management and Quality measurement data.
• Participating in Contract Management Team and Quality conference calls with health plans and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
• Reviewing health plan policies and procedures to verify compliance with state, federal, and program requirements.
• Review health plan marketing materials for compliance with state, federal, and program requirements.
• Participating in calls with external partners on crosscutting issues and projects.
• Researching specific policy items through available literature and sharing information with the Section Manager and team so that decisions can be made.
• Actively participating in team discussions as new issues are discussed and strategies are developed for moving forward.
• Developing training materials and job aids.

Examples of duties

At the time of internship, you must be enrolled at an accredited university pursuing a masters degree in Social Work, Public Health, Business Administration, Public Administration, Health Care Administration, Law, or equivalent.

Supplemental information

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and abilities:

• Able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
• Familiar with video conferencing using Zoom and Microsoft TEAMS.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Able to learn new technology quickly.
• Able to manage time independently to complete projects timely.

To ensure a successful internship experience, the student should have some experience or understanding of healthcare programs that support vulnerable adults (i.e. seniors and people with disabilities) who need assistance so that they can actively participate in discussions. While most meetings will be completed by video conferencing, some in-person meetings may be needed to pick up materials or join an in-person meeting. Most of the work of this position is completed remotely.
