Are you a dedicated and highly effective educator committed to raising the achievement of all students within your subject area? Join us as a Teacher, where you will be instrumental in delivering high-quality learning, utilising a range of teaching and learning strategies to ensure student success.

This position requires a professional who is aware of strategies for improving learning, understands curriculum developments, and is creative in finding solutions to enhance student performance.

Welcome from the Principal - Carlton

I'm thrilled to introduce you to Outwood Academy Carlton, serving the communities of Royston and Carlton. Our core purpose is to repeatedly grow well-informed, 'good' human beings armed with the character, skill, and qualifications to be successful. This aligns seamlessly with the Trust’s vision of ‘students first, raising standards and transforming lives.’

I am immensely proud of our students, who possess a strong moral code and behave exceptionally well. They actively contribute to the community and understand the importance of fundamental British values.

We deliver a holistic education through our 5 pillars of learning and explicitly teach behaviours using positive discipline, ensuring all students know how to be safe, responsible, respectful, and extraordinary. Our staff's unwavering dedication is pivotal to this success.

We are seeking prospective colleagues who share our passion for developing well-rounded individuals and align with our core purpose. I look forward to welcoming you into our academy.

The Maths Department

Our maths department is a friendly, supportive and high performing team of 9 teachers. The department includes a combination of experienced and more recently-qualified staff. The department is a great place to start your career as a teacher as well as somewhere where more experienced staff can thrive.

The department is extremely well resourced. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team in frequent and highly effective episodes of guided practice to develop strong procedural knowledge and confidence for independent and deliberate practice. There is a substantial departmental office and the department is supported by one 1:1 Maths tutors and one Specialist TA.

The department is heavily invested in developing strong disciplinary knowledge at KS3 and KS4.

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for GCSE foundation and higher in Maths. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of Maths directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise.

Outwood Grange Academies Trust provides a high-quality learning and cultural environment that inspires and motivates children. Whether you are ambitious for progression or determined to be an outstanding classroom teacher, Outwood is the place for you. Leadership development, succession planning and capacity building are major priorities for the Trust as this enables us to facilitate rapid progression for those who want to advance either in the classroom or at a leadership level.

You can help us take things to the next level.

Outwood Academy Carlton is an Ofsted Good rated, 11- 16 academy based in the friendly, attractive village of Carlton in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The Academy became part of the Outwood Family of Schools in 2016.

In October 2024, Ofsted noted that “students are taught to be ‘good human beings’ as part of the ethos at Outwood Academy Carlton” and that they “have a strong moral code and behave well in and outside of lessons”, including contributing to the wider community. Ofsted also noted that “leaders are determined that all students should succeed and be well prepared for life through a curriculum that develops their knowledge, skills and character”. Furthermore, Ofsted acknowledges that students who regularly attend school make strong progress as a result of the school’s rapid improvement.

We believe that learning should be both enjoyable and enriching. We are innovators with a knowledge-rich curriculum, designed to personalise learning for every student, helping them to reach their potential.

With a holistic view of education, we value vocational, practical, creative and academic excellence equally, creating an environment where every student can shine.

We have won numerous awards as a school and we have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award, in addition to being an IQM Centre of Excellence, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also delighted to have been awarded the United Against Bullying Bronze Award from the Anti-Bullying Alliance of the National Children’s Bureau which demonstrates our commitment to stopping bullying and improving the wellbeing of our students. We are also very proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.
