Summary

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks a General Maintenance Technician. This is a permanent, full-time (12-month position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Instructors are responsible for developing, instructing, and supervising students at the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics to demonstrate improved competency in the teacher's area of expertise and assignment. In partnership with the Department Chair, VP for Academics, and others, instructors are charged with evaluating, recommending, and implementing plans for effective curriculum delivery.

Responsibilities of the Mathematics Instructor:

  • Develop course content and methodology to achieve demonstrable student achievement in the area of instruction. Develop a student evaluation system for course content and instructional methods. Maintain appropriate class instruction schedules and explore, develop, and, when appropriate, implement innovative methodology for successful instruction. Work with the Director or Online Programs and Department Chair in developing, setting, and sharing successful instructional methods. As needed, support the school's mission as a full-time residential learning community and provider of outreach programs through assisting with instructing residential classes.
  • Work with students in and out of the classroom and counsel students to increase their understanding, comprehension, and effective demonstration of competency in the course(s). Set and maintain appropriate times for students to meet with the instructor to improve competency. Effectively monitor students' progress, identifying weaknesses and strengths and preparing a program to improve any deficiencies. Report achievements (grades) and academic problem areas in a timely manner as set by the Director of Online Programs and/or the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or VP for Academics.
  • Support school activities as a residential learning community by following school guidelines and procedures for all activities including submitting self-evaluations, providing required data for assessment, writing letters of recommendation, and participating in meetings and other events. Work with the Director of Online Programs and/or the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or the VP for Academics in completing GSSM's employee evaluation and faculty growth procedures.

Examples of duties

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM related field such as Mathematics, Engineering, or Science or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching (5 years minimum), preferably teaching middle school and high school students.
  • Excellent communication and motivational skills for high academic results with the target student population.
  • Classroom and student management skills (computer entry, grading, Canvas LMS, etc.).
  • Online teaching experience.
