POSITION TITLE

Mathematics Academic Coach

APPOINTMENT

Appointed by the Chancellor of the College upon recommendation of the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs

LINE AND STAFF RELATIONSHIPS

Directly responsible to the Dean of Students (or designee)

Campus: Gonzales Campus (Travel to other campuses as needed)

Employment Status: Part-Time (Up to 28 hours per week)

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The Part-Time Mathematics Academic Coach provides academic coaching, tutoring, and targeted intervention services to students enrolled in mathematics courses. The Academic Coach works collaboratively with mathematics faculty and Student Success Coaches to identify and support students experiencing academic challenges, improve course completion, and increase student success and retention.

This position maintains an assigned caseload of students, monitors academic progress, provides individualized coaching and tutoring, and connects students with additional campus resources when appropriate. The position is primarily based on the Gonzales Campus but may require travel to other RPCC campuses to meet student and institutional needs.

Examples of duties

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, preferably in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field.
• Experience teaching mathematics at the secondary or postsecondary level.
• Demonstrated ability to explain mathematical concepts to students with varying academic backgrounds.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
• Strong computer skills and the ability to learn institutional software systems.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accurate documentation.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel between RPCC campuses as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field.
• College-level mathematics teaching experience.
• Experience tutoring developmental and college-level mathematics.
• Experience working with diverse student populations in a community college setting.
• Experience utilizing student success technologies, learning management systems, or early alert software.

• Ability to build collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

• Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout campus facilities.
• Ability to lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment and computer systems.
• Ability to travel between campuses.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in an office, classroom, tutoring center, and other campus environments. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required.

Employment Conditions

• Part-time position not to exceed 28 hours per week.
• Primary work location is the Gonzales Campus.
• Travel to other RPCC campuses may be required based on student and operational needs.
• Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and institutional need.

Supplemental information

Academic Coaching & Student Case Management (35%)

• Maintain an assigned caseload of mathematics students requiring additional academic support.
• Monitor student performance, attendance, engagement, and academic progress throughout the semester.
• Proactively contact students demonstrating academic risk and develop individualized success plans.
• Maintain regular communication with assigned students to encourage persistence, accountability, and successful course completion.

Mathematics Tutoring & Instructional Support (35%)

• Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in developmental and college-level mathematics courses.
• Assist students with mathematical concepts, problem-solving strategies, study skills, and effective learning techniques.
• Facilitate review sessions, workshops, and other academic support activities designed to improve student learning and course success.

Faculty Collaboration & Student Intervention (15%)

• Collaborate with mathematics faculty to identify students in need of academic intervention.
• Review student progress with instructors and recommend strategies to improve student outcomes.
• Participate in early alert initiatives and coordinated intervention efforts to promote student success.

Documentation, Reporting & Referrals (10%)

• Document all coaching sessions, tutoring appointments, student contacts, and intervention activities using institutional systems.
• Analyze student progress and maintain accurate records to support assessment and reporting.
• Refer students to Student Success Coaches and other campus resources as appropriate.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA and institutional policies.

Professional Development & Other Duties (5%)

• Participate in professional development opportunities related to mathematics instruction, tutoring, academic coaching, and student success.
• Travel between RPCC campuses as needed to provide student support services.
• Assist with special projects, outreach activities, and other duties as assigned in support of the College's mission.
