Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre–Math and Numeracy Instructor
Nature of the assignment The Math and Numeracy Instructors at the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre support students’ mathematics, problem-solving, critical thinking, and reasoning skills across all disciplines, including Mathematics and Science.
Assignment description The position will primarily involve one-on-one instruction and drop-in appointments with undergraduate students. The position may also involve delivering group instruction such as informal discussion groups and formal workshops at UTM.

Hours of Work (per position) 40 to 60 hours – subject to change
Schedule Information Instructors’ duties will include a combination of in-person and online instruction during the RGASC’s opening hours (Monday to Friday from 9am –5pm). In-person appointments will be held at the UTM Campus. The RGASC uses the WCONLINE platform for appointments. Paid training is mandatory for all instructors who have not received training in the past four months. Training will be held in the first two weeks of September.
Sessional Dates of Appointment 1 September 2026 – 30 April 2027 (Fall 2026/Winter 2027 semesters)
Salary
$56.46/hour (Writing Instructor 1)
$60.69/hour (Writing Instructor 2)
$62.48/hour (Writing Instructor 2 – Priority)
All positions are subject to budgetary approval. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications
A graduate degree in Mathematics or Science (PhD preferred)
Experience teaching critical thinking, problem-solving, and study skills in the Mathematics and Sciences disciplines
Experience working one-on-one and in a small group setting, both in person and online, with Mathematics and Science students at a post-secondary institution
Demonstrated ability to facilitate interactive workshops
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a highly collaborative setting
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Experience as a TA or instructor for mathematics or science post-secondary courses
Preferred Qualification Familiarity with course content of MAT102H, MAT133Y, MAT132/4H, MAT135/6H, MAT223H, and MAT232H, and foundational statistics are preferred.
