Project Overview:

Mining and Metals:

Increasing production of critical minerals provides key components of clean energy technologies, from wind turbines to batteries. This shift to clean energy—and the need for commodities—is critical to underpinning the energy transition. At Bechtel, our teams extract these vital resources to support net zero in a way which is more sustainable than ever before.

In this role, you will provide expertise, advice, and direction for design office and field materials management activities within the global business unit to ensure the overall organizational effectiveness among all functions responsible for the materials management process. Facilitates policy and procedure implementation and approves aspects of project execution plans involving material management and inventory control systems. Plans, directs, coordinates, and monitors personnel actions for material management staff.

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership”.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Providing functional guidance to personnel assigned to project materials management, both in the design and field offices. Includes both materials coordination and materials planning specialists/supervisors.
  • Managing the global business unit Material Management function to ensure projects and activities are planned, resourced, and implemented in an effective manner.
  • Advising Supply Chain Management regarding automation of work processes and material management operations.
  • Performing employee performance evaluations for direct reports covering global business unit Material Management personnel for the review and approval of the GBU Manager of Contracts and Procurement. Reviewing annual performance evaluations to ensure consistency by project supervisors. Ensuring that career discussions are performed when required.
  • Evaluating skills and proficiency of personnel towards material management implementation. Developing and directs necessary training programs to maintain proper personnel qualifications.
  • Determining needs of assigned personnel for materials management training; reviewing needs and plans with GBU functional managers. Advising and assisting corporate Supply Chain on the development of training programs relative to materials management and DSCS.
  • Developing and implementing quality initiatives and programs to systematically improve Supply Chain’s company-wide services.
  • Developing and maintaining GBU functional procedures and instructions for Supply Chain personnel reference and implementation.
  • Performing Functional Reviews on projects to ensure adherence to the project execution plan and procedural compliance.
  • Providing expert advice to projects to assist in execution and materials management planning
  • Reviewing project plans for adequacy of material warehousing, maintenance, control and handling.
  • Providing expert advice for the preparation of project work hour estimates and organizational charts. Forecasts long-range personnel requirements and coordinates timely staffing of positions with GBU Supply Chain operations.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • 8 years’ experience in project-based materials management of major equipment and bulk materials.
  • Experience on a major module project is preferred.
  • Has worked on large projects (>$2 billion) involving multi-office global execution and logistics.
  • Advanced knowledge of front-end materials management work processes and systems expertise.
  • Advanced knowledge of project Procurement operations related to the acquisition of materials on projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of Engineering disciplines, the work process and the deliverables produced.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s Digital Supply Chain System materials management aspects of drawing takeoff input, Material Acquisition Planner, input of requisitions, and goods and services codes is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of supplier / fabricator data systems and how those systems can interact with DSCS is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of advanced work packaging, pre-buy methodology, and materials status reporting.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable Bechtel policies, instructions, and Procurement procedures and guidelines, and specifically familiarity in Field Engineering and Construction activities associated to the Integrated Work Process Procedures related to materials management.
  • Prior experience in major global, direct hire and contract management projects, which include Engineering, Procurement, and material control activities.
