Job Location: Main Hospital Campus Headquarters - Madison, WV 25130
Position Type: Full TimeThe Materials Management Technician – Surgical Services is responsible for the accurate, timely, and efficient management of surgical supplies, instruments, and implantable devices in the Operating Room (OR), ambulatory surgery center, and associated procedural areas. This role ensures that surgeons, nurses, and surgical technologists have the correct materials available when needed while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, infection control protocols, and inventory cost-control initiatives.
Essential Functions

- Receive, inspect, unpack, and verify surgical supplies, implants, consignment items, and instruments against purchase orders and packing slips.
- Stock OR core supply areas, procedure rooms, sub-sterile areas, and case carts according to established par levels and surgeon preference cards.
- Build and maintain accurate case carts for scheduled surgical procedures, including specialty items, implants, and loaner trays.
- Rotate stock using FIFO (first-in, first-out) principles and monitor expiration dates; remove and document expired or compromised items.
- Coordinate the ordering, receipt, and return of loaner instrumentation and consignment implants with vendors and central sterile processing.
- Perform daily cycle counts, quarterly inventories, and reconcile discrepancies in the materials management information system (MMIS) or ERP (e.g., Lawson, PeopleSoft, Epic OpTime, etc.).
- Collaborate closely with OR clinical staff to update preference cards and adjust par levels based on procedure volume and surgeon requests.
- Process urgent add-on cases by locating and delivering needed supplies/instruments in real time.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of supply rooms, shelves, and carts in accordance with AORN standards and infection prevention guidelines.
- Participate in product trials, conversions, and value-analysis initiatives with clinical teams and supply chain leadership.
- Troubleshoot supply-related issues during procedures and serve as the primary point of contact for vendor representatives in the surgical suite.
- Generate reports on usage, costs, backorders, and substitute items as requested.
- Assist with recall alerts and product holds; locate and sequester affected items promptly.
Skills,

Qualifications, and Competencies
- Certification as a Certified Materials & Resource Professional (CMRP), Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
- Previous experience building case carts and managing loaner/consignment trays.
- Lean/Six Sigma or process improvement training.
- Attention to detail and accuracy under pressure
- Excellent communication and teamwork with clinical and non-clinical staff
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
- Professional demeanor when interacting with surgeons, nurses, and vendor representatives

Physical demands
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs., push/pull heavy carts, and reach overhead.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and climbing step stools in the OR supply areas.
Travel required
- Minimal, if any, travel required.
Education and experience
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in inventory, supply chain, or related healthcare support role helpful but not required.
