Primary Purpose of Role

The Materials Planning Intern supports daily materials planning and inventory control operations within a distribution center. This role helps ensure parts availability, improves replenishment accuracy, and drives process improvements in reporting, stocking strategies, and warehouse flow. The intern will contribute to data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives that reduce stockouts, excess inventory, and operational waste.

Key Responsibilities

  • The main responsibility of this position will be to assist in the completion of special projects related to materials planning, logistics optimization, or supply chain efficiency. Other duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assist with daily inventory monitoring, including tracking stock levels, shortages, and replenishment needs.
  • Support the maintenance and accuracy of material master data within the ERP/MRP system.
  • Help prepare and update inventory and materials planning reports, dashboards, and performance metrics.
  • Participate in cycle counts, variance analysis, and root-cause investigations to improve inventory accuracy.
  • Collaborate with purchasing, operations, and warehouse teams to resolve material availability issues.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives, such as workflow mapping, data cleanup, and reporting standardization.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Logistics, Business Analytics, or related field.
  • Prior internship, co‑op, or hands‑on project experience (academic or extracurricular) is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or equivalent productivity tools.
