The Opportunity

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Master, you will perform the following tasks:

  • Standing watch on the bridge; navigating the vessel; checking all navigational equipment to ensure that it is operational; analyzing information, taking appropriate action; and conveying vessel clearance procedures to the Master.
  • Supervising the loading and unloading of the car deck vehicles and foot passengers; ensuring the vessel is secure for traffic movement and that the ramps are in position; maintaining trim and drafts; conducting dangerous cargo inspections; and assisting with the special needs of passengers.
  • Planning, directing and organizing a crew into different watches; delegating the duties of the vessel; conducting crew inspections; providing training; and handling discipline.
  • Performing administrative duties including ordering and conservation of deck stores; ensuring vessel security; arranging for repair and maintenance of deck area and equipment; investigating accidents; maintaining a refit list; and completing employee timesheets, mate's log and various reports.
  • Inspecting the general appearance, condition and maintenance of all equipment on board the vessel; preparing the vessel for inspections and annual refit.
  • Liaising with other departments inside and outside the vessel; and handling passenger complaints.
  • Leading, directing, and training crew in fire, safety and boat drills; and responding to emergency situations.

What you bring to the team

You are a passionate, innovative leader with the ability to communicate and liaise cooperatively with shipboard personnel and other BC Ferries departments. You are computer literate and have clear, concise communication skills. The successful candidate will hold at least a valid Master 3000 or 500 GT Domestic and/or Chief Mate Near Coastal certificates In addition, a familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite would be an asset. Preference will be shown to applicants residing on Haida Gwaii.
