Job Description

Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) and law enforcement authorities process large volumes of Suspicious Activity Reports (Geldwäscheverdachtsmeldungen - GVMs) containing unstructured text and structured information. Manual analysis is time-consuming and makes it difficult to identify relevant patterns and connections. The I-WASH project aims to support investigators by applying modern ML methods to accelerate analysis, improve consistency, and reveal relevant structures in GVM data.

The goal of this master thesis is to investigate state-of-the-art ML models and methodologies for the analysis of GVMs.
Possible Research Directions:

  • Synthetic Data, Evaluation Frameworks and Benchmarks for AML
  • LLMs for AML Case Understanding
  • Graph Neural Networks for AML Pattern Detection
  • Explainable AI for Investigator Support

What you contribute

  • Strong programming skills (Python)
  • Solid foundations in machine learning
  • Interest in NLP and LLMs, and/or graph-based methods
  • Willingness to implement new methods and prepare results for publications
  • Completed bachelor's degree
