Job Description
Position Summary
The Master Scheduler is responsible for developing, maintaining, and executing the master production schedule across additive and subtractive manufacturing operations. This role balances customer and project commitments with available capacity, materials, labor, equipment, outside processing, and intercompany resources to establish realistic and achievable delivery timelines.
The Master Scheduler serves as a key cross-functional partner to Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Purchasing, Project Management, Operations, and Solutions, proactively identifying constraints and risks, driving resolution, and ensuring schedule commitments remain aligned with business and customer requirements.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Master Schedule Ownership
- Develop, maintain, and communicate the master production schedule across additive and subtractive manufacturing operations.
- Balance customer and project requirements against machine capacity, labor availability, materials, outside processing, lead times, and other operational constraints.
- Establish realistic production timelines and proactively identify schedule conflicts, bottlenecks, and risks.
- Maintain visibility to schedule performance and communicate changes, risks, and required actions to stakeholders.
- Ensure the master schedule reflects current business priorities and customer commitments.
Capacity Planning
- Monitor and evaluate machine, labor, outside processing, and intercompany capacity to support current and future demand.
- Identify capacity constraints and develop recommendations for schedule adjustments, resource allocation, overtime, outsourcing, or other corrective actions.
- Partner with Manufacturing and Operations leadership to identify capacity requirements and support short- and long-term capacity planning.
- Evaluate the impact of capacity constraints on customer commitments and project timelines.
Project and Order Prioritization
- Establish production priorities based on customer commitments, project milestones, material availability, capacity, business requirements, and overall delivery impact.
- Re-sequence work as priorities, customer requirements, or operational constraints change.
- Evaluate the downstream impact of schedule changes and communicate priorities and trade-offs to affected departments.
- Ensure priorities are clearly understood across functional teams.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Partner closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Purchasing, Project Management, Operations, and Solutions to maintain alignment with the master schedule.
- Lead or participate in regular schedule and production reviews.
- Communicate schedule changes, risks, constraints, recovery actions, and required decisions.
- Drive cross-functional alignment when competing priorities or constraints impact customer or project commitments.
Outside Processing (OSP) Management
- Partner with Purchasing and other stakeholders to identify, plan, and monitor outside processing requirements.
- Ensure OSP activities are incorporated into the master schedule and tracked through completion.
- Proactively identify supplier or OSP delays that could impact production or customer commitments.
- Escalate risks and coordinate recovery actions when OSP performance threatens the schedule.
Intercompany Scheduling
- Coordinate with intercompany manufacturing sites to establish realistic timelines, capacity requirements, priorities, and handoffs.
- Incorporate intercompany requirements and commitments into the master schedule.
- Track intercompany work through completion and ensure schedule expectations are clearly understood and maintained.
- Identify potential delivery gaps early and work with stakeholders to determine the appropriate manufacturing path and recovery actions required to achieve on-time customer delivery.
Manufacturing Review and Quoting Support
- Partner with the Solutions Team during the quoting process to evaluate the feasibility of proposed projects and establish a clear path to execution.
- Provide input regarding ESD requirements, powder availability, outside processing, additive and subtractive manufacturing constraints, capacity, lead times, and other potential execution risks.
- Participate in Manufacturing Reviews for new and existing work.
- Provide scheduling and lead-time input to ensure quoted delivery dates are achievable and supported by available capacity and resources.
- Identify potential execution risks early enough to influence quoting, planning, and project commitments.
Schedule Recovery
- Develop and coordinate recovery plans for jobs or projects that fall behind schedule.
- Partner with Purchasing, Manufacturing, Operations, and other stakeholders to coordinate expedited materials, OSP, intercompany work, overtime, re-prioritization, or other recovery actions.
- Assess the impact of recovery actions on other customer and project commitments.
- Communicate revised timelines, risks, and recovery plans to appropriate stakeholders.
- Escalate issues requiring leadership decisions or resource intervention.
ERP/MRP Planning Data and Risk Management
- Maintain accurate and reliable planning and scheduling data within the ERP/MRP system.
- Ensure production dates, lead times, routings, work centers, capacity parameters, and other planning inputs accurately reflect current operating conditions.
- Identify and correct data issues that could negatively impact scheduling, capacity planning, or delivery commitments.
- Maintain visibility to significant schedule risks and constraints and ensure appropriate actions and owners are identified.
- Partner with functional teams to improve the accuracy and reliability of planning data.
Continuous Improvement
- Analyze scheduling constraints, recurring delays, capacity issues, and bottlenecks to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and implement improvements to scheduling processes, planning parameters, and cross-functional workflows.
- Use schedule performance and operational data to identify root causes and improve planning accuracy and execution.
- Promote standardized planning and scheduling practices that improve on-time delivery, capacity utilization, and overall operational performance.
Key Measures of Success
- On-time delivery to customer and project commitments.
- Master schedule accuracy and adherence.
- Effective utilization of available manufacturing and outside processing capacity.
- Reduction of schedule disruptions, bottlenecks, and avoidable delays.
- Timely identification and resolution of schedule risks.
- Accuracy and reliability of ERP/MRP planning data.
- Effectiveness and timeliness of schedule recovery plans.
- Cross-functional alignment and responsiveness to changing business priorities.
- Timely and accurate scheduling, capacity, lead-time, and manufacturing feasibility input during the quoting process.
- Accuracy and achievability of quoted delivery dates based on available capacity, materials, outside processing, intercompany resources, and manufacturing constraints.
