JOB TITLE: Master Mechanic

DEPARTMENT: Transportation

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time 12 Month


MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or GED. ASE certification preferred. Some heavy diesel training from an accredited college or trade school preferred. Class B Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements Required State school bus inspector certification required.

Experience: Minimum 3 years work experience in bus or medium/light duty truck repair and maintenance. At least 1 year in school bus transportation industry preferred.

Skills: Valid CDL class B with air brake, passenger, and school endorsements. SDE school bus certification. Knowledge in all aspects of bus and truck repair and maintenance. Able to read, write and communicate in English.

Able to read, write and communicate in English. Willing and able to repair and maintain a diverse fleet of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles. Assist drivers with maintenance of vehicles.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to the position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

  1. Follows all rules, policies and procedures of Broken Arrow Public Schools,along with regulations pertaining to the Transportation Department.
  2. Diagnoses and repairs mechanical problems and communicates possible solutions. Maintains diesel and gasoline vehicles and equipment.
  3. Services, repairs, overhauls and tests vehicles and all component parts and systems.
  4. Rotates, aligns, and balances wheels.
  5. Installs shock absorbers.
  6. Repairs and replaces damaged vehicle body parts.
  7. Tests electrical systems and makes necessary repairs.
  8. Repairs carburetors, ignition systems, and electrical components.
  9. Checks and repairs doors and lifts.
  10. Removes, replaces, and reassembles transmissions and clutches, fuel, oil, and water pumps, generators, and other parts of the engine and suspension system.
  11. Performs general maintenance as needed.
  12. Installs rings and bearings, and ensures proper adjustment.
  13. Tunes motors using standard testing equipment.
  14. Refaces brakes drums and realigns brakes.
  15. Lays out and fabricates parts.
  16. Performs duties and responsibilities as requested by the Transportation Director or designee.
  17. Performs fifteen (15) hours of continuing education every two (2) years.
  18. Drives a school bus route based on operational need.

Ability to project a professional company image through in-person, phone, and electronic interaction. Ability to build and foster harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with District staff and the public while achieving the objectives and goals of the position. Ability to handle problematic and/or difficult situations professionally by communicating with the appropriate person.

ATTENDANCE STATEMENT:

Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Exposure to extremes of heat and cold. Expected to safely handle assigned vehicle in any

weather conditions and on varying road surfaces.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:

  • Ability to manipulate objects of up to 50 lbs for 20 feet is required
  • Must pass DOT physical and Drug Screening
  • Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities
  • Sitting for length of assigned route
  • Use of hands and arms to assist with wheelchairs, setting brakes, foot pedals, etc.
  • Climbing and descending bus steps
  • Stooping, kneeling, and crouching as required for student care
  • Talking and hearing as to communicate concerning job-related duties as assigned
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) with or without correction
  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) with or without correction
  • Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
  • Peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
