Master Data Management Lead


The Master Data Management Lead is responsible for the day-to-day execution and continuous improvement of the master data management function, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across all products, vendor, and location data. This role directly manages an MDM Analyst/Specialist and serves as the primary operational owner of item setup, data governance, and system integration processes. This is a hands-on leadership role suited for a detail-oriented data professional who can balance individual execution with team development, maintain high standards of data quality, and partner effectively with merchants, IT, and cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate brings deep MDM expertise, a process improvement mindset, and the ability to translate business needs into sound data practices. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Team Leadership & Development:

  • Directly manage MDM Analyst/Specialist(s), providing day-to-day direction, coaching, and performance feedback
  • Assign and prioritize work across the MDM team based on business timelines and complexity
  • Develop the team’s technical skills in data entry, quality control, and system usage
  • Foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement within the MDM team
  • Escalate complex issues and resource conflicts to the Manager, Merchandising Data & Analytics as appropriate

Product Data Management & Item Setup:

  • Oversee and perform creation and maintenance of all product master data including SKU attributes, descriptions, hierarchies, UPCs, and pricing
  • Manage new item setup processes to ensure timely and accurate data entry aligned with merchant timelines and system requirements
  • Establish and maintain product hierarchy structures including department, class, subclass, and SKU relationships
  • Partner with merchants on attribute standardization, product descriptions, and taxonomy management
  • Manage item lifecycle from creation through discontinuation including status changes, replacements, and historical data retention
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain on case pack, ordering units, and logistical attributes

Data Governance & Quality Management:

  • Execute and continuously refine data governance policies, standards, and procedures across all master data domains
  • Monitor data quality metrics to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency across systems
  • Implement and maintain data validation rules and controls to prevent errors at point of entry and throughout the data lifecycle
  • Conduct regular data audits to identify and remediate data quality issues and inconsistencies
  • Track and report data quality KPIs including error rates, completeness, timeliness, and compliance to the Manager
  • Define data stewardship responsibilities and hold team accountable to established standards

Vendor & Location Management

  • Manage vendor master data including supplier information, payment terms, contact details, and performance tracking
  • Oversee vendor onboarding processes ensuring accurate setup in all relevant systems
  • Maintain location master data including store information, distribution centers, and cross-docking facilities
  • Coordinate vendor data changes with Procurement, Accounts Payable, and Planning teams
  • Partner with Finance and Supply Chain on vendor and location data requirements and maintenance

System Integration & MDM Platform Management:

  • Serve as operational owner of the MDM/PIM platform, ensuring data is centralized, synchronized, and maintained to defined standards
  • Ensure data integration and synchronization across ERP, POS, merchandising, e-commerce, and warehouse management systems
  • Partner with IT on system configuration, data mapping, integration workflows, and troubleshooting
  • Manage data migration activities for system implementations, upgrades, and consolidations
  • Maintain data models, attribute definitions, and business rules within MDM platform in partnership with IT

Process Documentation & Improvement:

  • Design, document, and maintain master data management processes, workflows, and standard operating procedures
  • Identify and implement opportunities to streamline data entry, reduce errors, and improve operational efficiency
  • Create and maintain training materials to enable consistent data management practices across the team
  • Proactively surface recommendations for system enhancements, process improvements, and policy updates to the Manager

Cross-Functional Partnership:

  • Build collaborative working relationships with merchants, buyers, and category managers to support their data needs
  • Partner with Planning, Pricing, and Space Planning on data requirements for their analytical processes
  • Collaborate with Finance on data requirements for financial reporting, margin analysis, and inventory valuation
  • Educate business stakeholders on data governance standards and their role in maintaining data quality

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications:

  • Deep expertise in product information management, data governance frameworks, and data quality methodologies
  • Strong understanding of retail product hierarchies, SKU attributes, vendor data, and location data structures
  • Experience with MDM/PIM platforms and retail ERP systems
  • Strong understanding of database structures and data integration methodologies
  • Advanced Excel skills and SQL proficiency for data analysis, validation, and quality monitoring
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a lead, senior, or supervisory data management role
  • Experience implementing or administering MDM platforms within a retail environment
  • Hands-on experience with retail ERP systems such as Oracle Retail, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar
  • Proficiency with data quality tools and basic BI platforms such as Power BI or Tableau
  • Knowledge of data modeling, ETL processes, and API integration methodologies
  • Certification in data management (CDMP) or related credentials
