Compensation: $190,000-$205, 000 per annum

Miller Waste Systems is seeking an experienced and results-driven Director of Operations – ICI to lead and oversee the performance of our Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) operations. This role is responsible for driving operational excellence, financial performance, service reliability, and continuous improvement across front-end, roll-off services along with transfer station operations. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, the Director of Operations – ICI will play a key leadership role in ensuring Miller Waste delivers exceptional service to customers while prioritizing safety, operational efficiency, fleet utilization, and route productivity. This role works cross-functionally with Sales, Finance, Safety along with the Equipment Group to align operational execution with company growth objectives.
The successful candidate will be a strong operational leader with a customer-first mindset, capable of leading teams, improving processes, and driving measurable performance improvements across multiple districts.
Responsibilities:
As a Director of Operations – ICI, your duties will include but are not limited to:
Operational Leadership
• Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all ICI collection operations including front-end and roll-off services.
• Overall responsibility for transfer stations operations and haulage to landfills.
• Lead operational teams across districts to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable service delivery.
• Develop and implement operational strategies, policies, and best practices for improving productivity and service quality.
• Ensure consistent execution of operational standards and procedures across districts.
• Oversee dispatching, routing, and operational planning using the company’s route management system.
• Continuously evaluate route performance and service efficiency to improve productivity and reduce operational costs.
• Maintain a strong customer-centric focus ensuring service reliability and responsiveness.
Fleet & Equipment Collaboration
• Work closely with the Equipment and Maintenance Group to ensure fleet reliability and optimal equipment availability.
• Align operational requirements with preventative maintenance schedules and fleet lifecycle planning.
• Collaborate with equipment leadership to minimize downtime and maximize operational productivity.
• Support operational planning related to equipment deployment, replacement strategies, and fleet utilization.
Health, Safety & Compliance
• Champion a strong culture of health, safety, and environmental responsibility.
• Ensure operational practices align with company safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Promote accountability and safety leadership throughout the operational organization.
• Integrate safety expectations into operational planning and decision-making.
Financial & Business Performance
• Oversee financial performance of ICI operations across districts and service lines.
• Collaborate with Finance to develop operational budgets, forecasts, and productivity targets.
• Monitor key operational cost drivers including labour productivity, disposal costs, and contractor utilization.
• Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and profitability.
• Work with Sales leadership to address underperforming accounts and optimize service models.
Customer & Contract Management
• Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and service reliability across ICI operations.
• Support customer retention initiatives through strong operational performance.
• Work closely with the Sales team to support Key Accounts and complex service agreements.
• Participate in strategic customer meetings where operational expertise is required.
• Ensure service delivery aligns with contractual commitments and customer expectations.
Transfer Stations, Haulage & Disposal
Working closely with key managers to:
• Establish and drive best practices across transfer station operations.
• Oversee haulage from transfer stations to landfills and end markets.
• Determine optimal disposal locations by balancing cost, capacity, and operational efficiency.
• Evaluate internal versus third-party haulage and adjust the mix as needed.
• Increase internal tonnage flow to Miller Waste facilities where it supports margin and efficiency.
• Monitor disposal pricing, haulage economics, and market conditions.
• Identify opportunities to improve material flow, reduce handling, and lower overall system cost.
Sales & Operations Alignment
• Partner with the ICI Sales leadership team to support revenue growth initiatives.
• Participate in Sales & Operations (S&OP) meetings aligning operational capacity with sales growth.
• Collaborate with Sales on route densification strategies and service design for new customers.
• Provide operational insights to support pricing strategies and service planning.e
Key Performance Accountability Areas
• Financial Performance – revenue growth and operational profitability.
• Operational Productivity – efficiency of front-end and roll-off operations.
• Customer & Contract Management – customer retention and service reliability.
• Cost Management – labour productivity and operating cost control.
• Strategic & Management KPIs – trusted operational reporting and performance dashboards.
Competencies & Qualifications:
• Post-secondary education in Business, Operations Management, or a related field preferred.
• Equivalent operational leadership experience will also be considered.
• 10+ years of progressive operational leadership experience. Experience within the waste and recycling industry is preferred.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) operations.
• Experience overseeing front-end and roll-off collection operations including routing and dispatch.
• Experience leading multi-district or multi-site operational teams.
• Strong understanding of waste collection operations, route optimization, and fleet utilization.
• Proven ability to lead large operational teams and drive performance improvements.
• Strong experience collaborating with sales, finance, and equipment or maintenance teams.
• Demonstrated success improving operational efficiency, service reliability, and cost control.
• Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities in fast-paced operational environments.
• Deep understanding of financial metrics and their impact on organizational strategy and growth.
• Excellent communication and leadership presence.
