This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program.

Arlington Transit within the Department of Environmental Services (DES) seeks a motivated Marketing Intern to support public-facing transit initiatives and campaigns. This internship offers hands-on experience working with an embedded marketing contractor team to promote Arlington Transit (ART), Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents (STAR), and Arlington Microtransit (MICRO) services, rider programs, capital projects, and service updates. The intern will assist with content development, coordination, and campaign support across digital, print, and in-person channels while learning how public agencies partner with contractors to deliver effective, customer-focused communications.

Major Job Duties:

  • Supporting marketing efforts for Arlington Transit by assisting with content development, coordination, and deployment across multiple communication channels;
  • Assisting contractors and County staff with developing rider-facing materials, including digital content, presentations, surveys, outreach materials, and transit communications;
  • Coordinating and tracking marketing campaigns, timelines, and deliverables to ensure materials are organized, current, and completed on schedule;
  • Supporting updates to webpages, newsletters, email communications, and social media content related to transit services and programs;
  • Assisting with rider outreach and community engagement activities, including special events, pop-ups, promotions, and public engagement initiatives, and helping summarize feedback and engagement metrics;
  • Maintaining branding standards and guidelines, organizing marketing assets and shared files, and assisting with version control and documentation management;
  • Conducting research on transit marketing, rider engagement strategies, and industry best practices; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support Arlington Transit marketing, communications, and operational priorities.

The ideal candidate will have strong written communication skills, attention to detail, and an interest in marketing, communications, or public service. Candidates who enjoy collaborating with diverse teams and translating information into clear, customer-friendly messages will excel in this role.

Interns gain hands-on experience supporting key County initiatives while participating in a structured cohort-based development program. Throughout the year, interns work under the mentorship of senior staff, contributing fresh ideas, improving processes, and leveraging technology to enhance organizational effectiveness, all while familiarizing themselves with a public-sector environment.

Minimum Qualifications: Recent, 2025 and/or 2026 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the Cohort Program (Sept. 2026) must have:

  • No professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and
  • You may be a currently enrolled student in a Master’s degree program related to the internship, but you must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.

Degree Requirements: Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Business, or related discipline.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in or possession of one or more of the following:

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts;
  • Creating or supporting marketing, communications, or outreach materials;
  • Supporting the development and execution of marketing campaigns across paid, earned, and owned media;
  • Supporting campaign coordination, project tracking, or communications workflows; and/or
  • Social media, basic analytics, or content management systems.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record.

Additional Information

Work hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some flexibility and telework opportunities available upon prior approval from the supervisor. This is not a fully remote opportunity. Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.

Starting salary is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected. The pay range listed above is effective July 1, 2026.
