Job Description
About the Role
Every paid click, signup, and booked visit on our direct-to-consumer virtual care app runs through a chain of tags, events, and vendor integrations. That chain has to be accurate enough for Growth to commit budget against it, and disciplined enough that a patient's health information never ends up in an ad platform. As our Marketing Engineer, you own that chain end-to-end: Segment as the hub, the instrumentation in our product, the HubSpot marketing site, and the consent and audit controls that keep all of it defensible.
You sit in the engineering org and work across analytics, marketing, growth, and product. The lines are clear. Marketing and Growth lead campaign strategy and execution, Analytics leads measurement and analysis, and Legal and Security define data handling requirements. You own integrations, instrumentation, consent implementation, and technical reliability, and you hold the technical bar for how marketing data is collected, stored, and protected. Together, you prioritize the work that helps teams launch faster and make decisions with data they can trust.
The stakes are concrete. Tracking pixels on telehealth sites have drawn direct warnings from the FTC and HHS, and our stack has to meet HIPAA, SOC 2, and state consumer health data laws without slowing every launch to a crawl. You treat compliance as an engineering problem, with tests, logs, and documentation behind every claim. You also work the way our engineering team works, using AI coding tools to write and test instrumentation, check tracking plans, and catch broken events before anyone in Marketing notices.
What You'll Do
As our Marketing Engineer, your primary responsibilities include:
Marketing Data & Instrumentation
- Own and maintain our marketing tech stack end-to-end, with Segment as the central hub for data collection and routing across our vendor ecosystem.
- Implement and maintain events and analytics across our React/Next.js frontend and Django backend, writing clean, testable instrumentation code that engineering teams are proud to ship.
- Govern our event taxonomy in Segment Protocols, keeping the tracking plan documented, versioned, and enforced so a renamed event never silently breaks a dashboard.
- Build monitoring and alerting for pipelines and destinations so dropped events, duplicate conversions, and failing integrations surface before Marketing notices.
Privacy, Consent & Compliance
- Ensure PHI and PII are handled appropriately across the marketing stack, including proper data masking, consent management, and access controls.
- Implement consent capture and propagation from our consent platform through Segment to every downstream destination, so a patient's choice holds everywhere their data could travel.
- Build and maintain audit logging and data access trails for marketing data systems, so we can demonstrate our compliance posture to our legal team at any point.
- Partner with Legal and Security to turn data handling requirements into technical controls, and review each new marketing vendor and integration against them before it goes live.
Growth Infrastructure & Marketing Site
- Build and maintain components and templates for our marketing site, hosted on HubSpot.
- Collaborate with engineering on A/B testing infrastructure, feature flags, and growth experiments, contributing to shared systems rather than one-off scripts.
- Partner with Marketing to instrument campaigns, build conversion funnels, and surface growth insights, translating business questions into well-defined data requirements.
- Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot to draft instrumentation, generate tests, and audit tags and tracking plans faster than manual review allows.
Why You Might Be a Good Fit
- You have shipped instrumentation that a growth team actually bet budget on, and you know the difference between an event that fires and an event that is right.
- You treat a tracking plan like an API contract: named deliberately, documented, versioned, and tested.
- You get real satisfaction from making a messy vendor ecosystem reliable, and you would rather build monitoring once than debug the same broken destination every month.
- You see privacy and consent as design constraints to build around, not obstacles to route around.
- You move comfortably between a Next.js component, a Django model, a HubSpot template, and a Segment Function in the same week.
- You can explain to a marketer why a conversion count dropped, and to a lawyer exactly where a field goes, in plain language both of them trust.
- You use AI tools every day to write, test, and review code, and you check their output as carefully as you would a teammate's.
This Might Not Be The Right Fit If...
- You want to own campaign strategy or media buying. Marketing and Growth lead that work; you build what makes it run.
- You want to be the analyst. Analytics owns measurement and analysis; you make sure the data they rely on is complete and correct.
- You prefer pasting tags into a tag manager over writing tested, reviewed code in a shared codebase.
- You see consent rules, audit trails, and data handling reviews as paperwork rather than part of the engineering.
- You want a narrow lane. This role spans frontend, backend, CMS, and vendor integrations by design.
Your Qualifications
- 3+ years in a marketing engineering, growth engineering, or analytics engineering role.
- Fluency in JavaScript/TypeScript, and comfort reading or writing Python in a Django codebase.
- Hands-on experience with Segment, including sources, destinations, Protocols, and Functions.
- Experience in event governance: defining, documenting, and managing an event taxonomy as products and campaigns change.
- Experience with content management systems at an integration level, as a builder of components, templates, and integrations rather than only a user.
- Experience building or contributing to audit logging, access control, or compliance-oriented tooling.
- Familiarity with consent management platforms (OneTrust, Osano, or similar) and their technical implementation.
- Daily use of AI coding tools in your development workflow, with the judgment to verify what they produce.
- Clear communication with both engineering peers and non-technical marketing and legal stakeholders.
Bonus Points
- Prior work in a healthcare, healthtech, or other regulated industry, especially with PHI under HIPAA.
- Experience with experimentation platforms such as LaunchDarkly, Optimizely, or GrowthBook.
- Experience implementing server-side, Conversions API-only integrations for Meta or Google Ads, with no browser pixel.
- HubSpot CMS development experience, including HubL, custom modules, and themes.
