Job Description

Reports to:Director of Academic Services

Pay: $23/hour

Hours:10–20 hours per week (flexible; may include some evenings/weekends)
Appointment term: Academic year (with possibility of renewal based on performance and funding)

Other requirements: All new student employees must also complete UW's online Title IX course about preventing and responding to sex- and gender-based violence and harassment.

The Student Marketing & Engagement Assistant will support the School of Nursing and Health Studies by developing and executing a student-centered social media campaign, helping create and launch a Student Leadership Advisory Committee, assisting with recruitment and campus engagement activities, and staffing tabling and alumni/student events. This is a hands-on role ideal for a creative, organized student who wants experience in communications, student leadership, event operations, and higher-education outreach.

Key responsibilities

Social media & communications (40%)

  • Collaborate with the Academic Services Director and other personnel to develop and implement a social media campaign that highlights programs, student stories, events, and opportunities within the School of Nursing & Health Studies.

  • Produce short-form content (graphics, photos, short videos, captions, stories/reels) tailored to platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

  • Maintain an editorial calendar and schedule posts using the department’s social media tools.

  • Monitor engagement and compile monthly analytics summaries with recommendations for improvement.

Student Leadership Advisory Committee support (20%)

  • Assist with planning and recruitment for a Student Leadership Advisory Committee: draft recruitment materials, manage applications, and help coordinate selection timelines.

  • Support logistics for committee meetings (scheduling, agendas, minutes, follow-ups) and help implement committee initiatives.

  • Serve as a liaison between students and Dean’s Office staff as needed.

Recruitment & events (25%)

  • Represent the School at recruitment activities (campus visits, admitted student events, virtual info sessions), and assist with preparing materials and follow-up communication.

  • Staff tabling and outreach events on and off campus; collect contact information and follow-up leads.

  • Assist with event logistics for school events (set-up, check-in, technical support, volunteer coordination).

Student & alumni engagement (15%)

  • Plan and host engagement activities (tabling, informal meetups, student/alumni mixers) designed to build community.

  • Help maintain and update student and alumni contact lists and event attendance records.

  • Support small alumni outreach efforts under staff supervision.

Learning outcomes / professional development

By the end of the appointment, the student will have:

  • Designed and executed a measurable social media campaign.

  • Gained experience in recruiting and launching a student advisory committee.

  • Built practical skills in event planning and outreach in a higher-education setting.

  • Developed a professional portfolio of communications materials (graphics, sample posts, short videos) and a short report summarizing campaign results and recommendations.

Work environment & expectations

  • Must be able to work on campus (in-person tabling, events). Remote work may be available for certain tasks with supervisor approval.

  • Must adhere to university policies on data privacy, event conduct, and communications branding.

  • Maintain professional demeanor when interfacing with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external guests.

Required

  • Current undergraduate student

  • Strong written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Comfortable with social media platforms; basic content creation skills (smartphone photography/video, Canva or similar).

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team; dependable and punctual.

  • Ability to work some evenings/weekends for events.

Preferred

  • Prior experience in student leadership, social media management, event support, or campus recruiting.

  • SNHS Student
  • Familiarity with analytics basics (engagement metrics) and content scheduling tools.

  • Basic graphic design or video editing skills.

  • Understanding of confidentiality and professional conduct in an academic environment.
