Job Description

The Marketing Director is a strategic, channel-fluent leader responsible for driving integrated marketing across the organization — from campaign development and content strategy to audience growth and performance analysis.

The Marketing Director will work in close collaboration with the Creative Director to connect our creative team's output to the right channels and reach the right audiences. Reporting to the VP of Marketing & Communications, this role translates organizational priorities into campaigns that move audiences, manages a small but capable team, and works cross-functionally to understand priorities and drive business objectives.

The right person brings fluency across paid and organic channels, a track record of building and growing audiences, a systems-thinking mindset, and a genuine passion for mission-driven work.

Core Responsibilities

  • Own the strategy and deployment of multi-channel marketing campaigns aligned to organizational goals, maintaining brand standards, voice, and visual consistency across all channels and materials.
  • Translate leadership priorities into actionable campaign briefs and channel strategies. Serve as the connective tissue between our creative team — graphic design and copywriting — and our distribution channels, ensuring creative is built with strategy in mind from the start.
  • Partner closely with VP of Marketing and Communications to translate organizational priorities to individual campaigns, setting priorities, establishing KPIs, and ensuring channel execution is tied to broader campaign goals.
  • Own the marketing program budget — tracking paid media and channel spend, forecasting needs, and ensuring every dollar is allocated to drive measurable impact.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to develop and maintain the marketing editorial calendar, with direct ownership of integrated campaign planning, content strategy, and channel sequencing — ensuring the marketing program is grounded in audience insights, analytics, and organizational priorities.
  • Provide strategic direction across owned and earned channels including email, organic social, and content.
  • Lead our email and social acquisition strategy with a focus on sustainable list growth, in close partnership with Development. Develop and oversee campaigns specifically designed to convert new audiences into engaged subscribers, with email acquisition as a top priority. Apply a track record of building and growing email audiences through strategic, data-informed programs.
  • Bring hands-on paid media experience to critically evaluate performance data, identify optimization opportunities, and make informed recommendations on channel mix and budget allocation.
  • Work collaboratively with paid media partners to define objectives, shape channel strategy, and maintain a rigorous ongoing feedback loop that drives continuous improvement.
  • Oversee and evolve our marketing technology stack — including email platforms, CRM integrations, and analytics tools — ensuring systems support team efficiency and data-driven decision-making.
  • Mentor and support junior team members, particularly in areas of campaign planning, channel strategy, and analytics interpretation.
  • Regularly assess campaign and channel performance metrics, applying a growth marketing mindset to identify what's working, iterate quickly on what isn't, and uncover opportunities to scale impact.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of marketing experience, with demonstrated ownership of integrated campaigns across paid and organic channels.
  • A track record of building and growing email audiences through strategic acquisition programs.
  • Experience managing or evaluating agency and vendor relationships.
  • Nonprofit or mission-driven organization experience a plus but not required.
  • Deep fluency in integrated campaign strategy across paid and organic channels.
  • Strong communicator who can translate complex strategies into clear direction for creative and channel teams.
  • Strong understanding of email acquisition best practices, list hygiene, and audience segmentation.
  • Ability to evaluate paid media performance and agency relationships with a critical, data-informed lens.
  • Systems thinking: comfort with marketing technology stacks, platform integrations, and data workflows. Experience with an email platform implementation preferred.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop junior marketing talent.
  • Comfort working in a lean team environment where strategic thinking and hands-on collaboration coexist.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a shelter/animal hospital setting.
  • Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available
  • This role is eligible for a hybrid work schedule of 2–3 days remote per week.
  • Position requires occasional evening and weekend availability in support of organizational events and communications needs; schedule flexibility is expected.

Salary & Benefits

The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $137,000 - $152,000.

Regular, full-time positions are eligible for a benefits package including

  • Paid Time Off and Holiday pay
  • Medical, Dental & Vision insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Long-term Disability Insurance
  • 401k Retirement Plan and contribution matching

San Francisco SPCA

About San Francisco SPCA

At the San Francisco SPCA we envision a world in which the love people share with animals uplifts humanity to a state of greater compassion.

On a spring day in 1868, San Francisco banker James Sloan Hutchinson caught sight of two men dragging a terrified hog along the rough cobblestone street. Appalled, Hutchinson stepped in to stop the cruelty and rescue the hog. The incident crystallized Hutchinson’s concern over widespread animal abuse, and he soon rallied 15 like-minded citizens to found the San Francisco SPCA.

Since then the SF SPCA has become one of San Francisco’s most enduring and respected institutions. It is a national leader in saving homeless cats and dogs and working to end animal abandonment.

We all share a common passion here at the San Francisco SPCA. Not just for the animals saved, but for their companions and those in our community who then foster, volunteer, or adopt. Whether affected by illness, injury, or homelessness, the animals we help need our expertise and compassion. You could wake up every day knowing you’ll be “doing good work” in a fulfilling environment where no two days are the same. The SF SPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare for 150+ years, and Vision 2030 is our plan to positively impact 5+ million lives over the next decade. We are looking for animal-loving professionals to help us turn this vision into reality!
