Summary
The BMH GROWS (Guided Recovery through Opportunity, Work, and Support) Market Associate position is a 13-week, paid workforce development opportunity for individuals with lived experience in substance use recovery who are seeking to gain employment experience and rebuild professional skills. Trainees will participate in a structured program combining hands-on work and educational training focused on agriculture, retail operations, and site maintenance.
This program supports Boone Memorial Health’s mission to create recovery-to-work pathways that promote stability, confidence, and long-term employment readiness.

The Market Associate is expected to perform the following essential functions:
- Assist with daily operations at the Market on Main, including setup, stocking, customer service, and sales transactions.
- Support agricultural and greenhouse activities such as planting, watering, harvesting, and maintaining crops.
- Assist with community events and market programming, including setting up and breaking down event areas, decorating, distributing materials, greeting and engaging customers or attendees, and ensuring a welcoming and organized environment.
- Perform site maintenance duties, including cleaning, organizing, and light landscaping or facility upkeep.
- Participate in all scheduled educational modules focused on workplace readiness, communication, and professional development.
- Demonstrate consistent attendance, accountability, and professionalism.
- Collaborate effectively with fellow trainees, staff, and supervisors in a team-oriented environment.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when interacting with peers and customers.
- Attend regular check-ins and performance evaluations.
Required Skills,

Qualifications, and Competencies
- Lived experience with substance use recovery required; active participation in a recovery program preferred.
- Commitment to completing the full 13-week training period.
- Ability to work collaboratively and accept constructive feedback.
- Dependability, punctuality, and willingness to learn new skills.
- Strong interpersonal communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to perform light physical labor (standing, lifting up to 50 lbs., outdoor work).
- Reliable transportation to and from work sites.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- None.
Physical demands
- Requires regular standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, working indoors and outdoors, and operating basic tools and equipment related to agriculture and retail operations.
Travel required
- None beyond local work assignments at Market on Main and nearby program sites.
Required education and experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred but not required.
- Must be willing to complete all assigned on-the-job and educational training modules.
Preferred education and experience
- Previous work or volunteer experience in retail, agriculture, or maintenance preferred but not required.

Boone Memorial Health is a nonprofit healthcare company based in Boone County, West Virginia which owns and operates a critical access hospital with a 25-bed inpatient unit, Level IV Trauma Center, and Black Lung Center; two rural health clinics with two expansion locations; and a substance and mental health treatment program.
