Role Description & Purpose

Join the British Council’s English and Examinations (E&E) Strategic Business Unit and help shape the future of English language teaching, learning and assessment. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced education professional to drive continuous improvement across products and services, ensuring they meet customer needs and deliver outstanding learner experiences.

As part of E&E, one of the British Council’s two global strategic business units, you will contribute to a mission that builds trust and connections with the UK through education, skills and internationally recognised qualifications. As Market Academic Manager, you will maintain and enhance academic quality and professional development across the teaching centre through the management of teacher development programmes and academic support. You will promote high-quality teaching and effective learning, ensuring learners receive an engaging and rewarding English language learning experience while supporting the British Council’s wider cultural relations mission.

You will play a key role in delivering the British Council’s global English strategy by providing academic leadership and support to teaching teams. Working across teams and customer groups, you will implement plans that drive teaching excellence, product delivery and service quality, ensuring consistency and high standards across all learning activities.

Through your expertise and commitment to best practice, you will help strengthen the British Council’s reputation as a global leader in English Language Teaching.

Role Accountabilities

In this role, you will provide leadership and guidance to academic teams, ensuring that the latest innovations, evidence-based pedagogy and assessment best practices are embedded in programme delivery and product development. You will lead the implementation of Teaching Excellence initiatives, including teaching standards, observation systems, Teaching Excellence Action Plans, Teaching Centre Performance Reviews, and targeted learning and development programmes. You will also identify and nurture academic talent, promote best practice, and support safeguarding, SEND and EDI priorities.

Working closely with Proposition, Product and Teaching Excellence teams, you will oversee the effective implementation of products and services, contribute to product development processes, and support the testing, rollout and continuous improvement of new initiatives. You will monitor performance against agreed targets and KPIs, provide insights through regular reporting, and help drive commercial success through strong quality management.

As a key member of the market leadership team, you will contribute strategic academic and commercial perspectives, support workforce and succession planning, and champion the British Council’s values and standards. You will also build strong partnerships with operational, marketing and customer service teams, use market intelligence to inform decision-making, and ensure compliance with safeguarding, financial, security and risk management requirements, taking appropriate action where concerns arise.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent by experience
  • Fluent English at C2 level
  • TEFL-Q (DELTA from Cambridge / DipTESOL from Trinity College London) or a British Council recognised equivalent qualification
  • TYLEC or an equivalent Young Learner qualification
  • Demonstrated experience working in an English Language learning management or assessment development role.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with stakeholders across multiple sites / countries to achieve objectives.
  • Proven experience and demonstrable success in coordinating/supervising/influencing others in an international educational context.

Desirable

  • Verbal and written Spanish language skills
  • Masters in English Language Teaching / Assessment or another relevant field
  • Use of data, dashboards, and action on interpretation of customer insights to drive customer experience improvements and business performance.

Important Information

  • Location: the position is based in Mexico City, onsite.
  • Contract Type: this is a 2-year fixed term, full-time position
  • Salary: 48,856 – 54,963 MXN per month, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Benefits: 35 days of annual leave plus public holidays, private major medical insurance, 30 days of salary for Christmas bonus, 52% of monthly salary for Holiday Bonus
  • Right to Work: The candidates must have legal right to live and work in Mexico. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship or relocation support for this position.
  • Background Screening: all successful candidates are obliged to undergo comprehensive background screening
