TITLE: Marine Surveyor

DEPARTMENT EIMC

REPORTS TO: Team Leader

STATUS: Regular, Full-Time, Exempt

LOCATION: Houston, TX (Field-Based)

EIMC, an Engle Martin company, is an independent marine consulting services company providing supply chain loss control and claims investigation expertise to insurers, brokers, 3PLs and industrial partners. The Operations Team Leader will provides leadership and direct supervision to a team of Operations Specialists who support claims and risk management team scheduling, resource allocation, client communications, document production, database administration, vendor management, and sales activities.

OF JOB PURPOSE
The Marine Surveyor effectively determines and communicates the extent of loss or damage associated with ocean marine claims in a variety of business classes. The Marine Surveyor provides loss control survey supervision inspection and auditing services throughout the marine industry. The position assists the client in fulfilling its obligations under marine policies to policyholders and helps safeguard the insurer’s reputation and efficacy.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently completes required tasks in relation to survey assignments within the normal spectrum of operations.
  • Develops familiarity with marine claims handling and accepts a limited caseload as assigned.
  • Communicates and coordinates with internal and external parties to ensure timely scheduling of surveys.
  • Conducts surveys within assigned territory; may be assigned surveys that are outside normal territory that requires travel and overnight stay.
  • Identifies nature, cause, and extent without routine assistance and limited guidance.
  • Possesses and effectively utilizes testing and sampling tools.
  • Routinely produces clear, concise, and grammatically correct reports which require minimal editing by leader and follows company standards and SLAs (Service Level Agreements).
  • Engages in peer reviews with others as directed.
  • Consistently logs time and expenses with attention paid to estimates and client intent.
  • Develops understanding of financial and technical aspects of marine insurance.
  • Granted supervised authority to communicate with known clients by copied email when appropriate; demonstrates timely reliability to clients.
  • Pursues and completes NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors) and/or Lloyds credentialing.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with other members of the organization across departments, divisions, and locations.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of proprietary and sensitive information, exercising sound judgment and discretion in any disclosure of information related to the company and its endeavors.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required
  • At least three years of prior experience in ocean marine surveying or other marine insurance-related work, or a graduate of a maritime college with valid merchant marine licensure
  • Prior experience working with a cloud enterprise software solution preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequently requires work to be performed at the site of a survey assignment, including locations where disasters or catastrophes have occurred. May require evening, overnight, and weekend travel and work, which in some cases, could last two weeks or more. The incumbent could be exposed to outside weather and environmental conditions, including, but not limited to heights, low temperatures, high temperatures, and other atmospheric conditions (precipitation, wind, clouds, humidity). Could also be exposed to inside environmental conditions, including, but not limited to small and/or enclosed spaces, noisy environments, vibrations, proximity to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, or poor ventilation, and other hazardous conditions.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 lbs.; frequent standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, grasping, and eye-hand-foot coordination; occasionally may require repeating motions that include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; occasionally may require moving self in different directions to accomplish tasks in various environments; ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like; ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in a work capacity and move from one worksite to another; handling office equipment; visual acuity to assess the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned; speaking and hearing the spoken word in normal face-to-face, telephonic, and/or electronic business communications; ability to view and use a computer terminal and/or smartphone.
