Job Description

The Marine Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and auxiliary systems on vessels and marine facilities at one or more Carnival Corporation owned and operated global destinations. This role leads and supports engineering teams to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of propulsion systems, power generation, HVAC, plumbing, and other critical onboard equipment. The Marine Engineer collaborates closely with operations teams to optimize performance, maintain operational readiness, and ensure compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. This position plays a key role in supporting safe and efficient marine operations while upholding high standards of performance, service, and safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations & Maintenance Management

  • Oversee the daily operation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all vessel and marine facility systems, including propulsion, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and auxiliary machinery.
  • Monitor performance metrics of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems to ensure efficient and reliable operation.
  • Diagnose and resolve system malfunctions promptly to minimize operational downtime and maintain operational readiness.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to optimize equipment longevity and performance.
  • Collaborate with operations personnel to plan maintenance activities that align with vessel or facility schedules while maintaining safety standards.

Team Supervision & Technical Leadership

  • Supervise and coordinate marine technical teams and external contractors to ensure maintenance and repair work meets quality, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical training to junior engineering staff and crew members.
  • Delegate tasks, monitor team performance, and provide constructive feedback to enhance skills and efficiency.
  • Assist senior leadership, including operations management, with technical guidance, planning, and support for engineering projects.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and operational excellence within the engineering team.

Compliance & Safety Management

  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with maritime safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to verify adherence to safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify potential hazards in mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic systems and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in emergency drills and response planning to maintain team preparedness for critical situations.
  • Continuously review and update safety and compliance procedures to align with industry best practices.

Inventory & Documentation Management

  • Manage inventory of marine engineering parts, tools, and supplies, ensuring that resources are available and utilized efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, inspections, repairs, and operational performance to support audits and reporting.
  • Prepare detailed reports for management on system performance, maintenance activities, and compliance status.
  • Ensure proper documentation of service histories, technical procedures, and operational logs for reference and knowledge sharing.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure transparency and efficient communication regarding maintenance schedules and technical issues.

SKILLS SPECIFICS:

  • Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and technical skills for marine mechanical, electrical, and auxiliary systems.
  • Effective leadership, team management, and mentoring abilities.
  • Ability to work independently, perform under pressure, and multitask efficiently in dynamic maritime environments.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and commitment to safety, quality standards, and customer service.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in marine engineering or maritime maintenance roles.
  • Strong knowledge of marine propulsion, electrical systems, HVAC, plumbing, and auxiliary machinery maintenance and repair.
  • Relevant maritime certifications such as Chief Engineer License, STCW, or Certified Plant Operator (CPO) are advantageous and may be required within six months of employment.
  • Experience with reverse osmosis (RO) and wastewater treatment systems onboard vessels is a plus.
  • Previous guest-facing or customer service experience within maritime or hospitality industries is beneficial. Familiarity with maritime safety standards (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL) and environmental regulations is preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Clear, professional communication skills in English with crew members, operators, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and execute technical manuals, safety procedures, and regulatory documents.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physically capable of performing maintenance tasks, including lifting, climbing, and working in confined or challenging spaces; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working in varied weather conditions and environments, including engine rooms and outdoor marine settings.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to exercise critical thinking during routine operations and emergency situations.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and willingness to work onshore or offshore as operational needs require.
  • Strict adherence to maritime safety protocols and regulatory standards at all times.
