The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color.

POSITION BEING HIRED:

Percussion-Pit Section Head

POSITION PURPOSE Under the supervision of the Director, the Pit Instructor is responsible for
planning and instruction of the marching band’s percussion and auxiliary instrumental students. This
is considered an extracurricular contract.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include:
1. Assist in the instructional delivery of the pit section of the band.
2. Instruct students on their instrument, at their level, and ensures each student’s progress by
providing as much individualization as possible (including warm-ups and stick work).
3. Engage students to practice, play and perform introduced materials.
4. Attend all rehearsals, sectionals and performances actively participating in assisting
students in sectionals and whole group rehearsals.
5. Work with the Director during auditions and provide input into placement of students on
instruments of the pit.
6. Choreograph sticking and drum line movement to match the drill (visuals).
7. Assist Director in maintaining inventories of percussion supplies, materials, and
equipment; adjust and maintain percussion instruments ensuring timely availability for
student use.
8. Monitor and control student behavior according to established procedures and share any
concerns, etc. with the Director.

SALARY:

Salary per Unit 1 contract, prorated per length of season.
